CNN Commentator Steve Cortes Reportedly Being Considered as Replacement for Sarah Huckabee Sanders

Steve Cortes has been a staunch defender of the president for years.

President Donald Trump has been an outspoken critic of CNN, calling the network “fake news”–but his top choice to replace White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders, who announced she is stepping down after two years on the job, is a CNN commentator.

According to a report in Mediaite, CNN commentator Steve Cortes is being seriously considered for the White House Press Secretary job.

Cortes was reportedly contacted by the White House late last week. Cortes regularly appears on CNN programs like Anderson Cooper: 360, Jake Tapper’s The Lead, and Chris Cuomo’s Cuomo Prime Time. He is one of the only Trump supporters on the network. Cortes also served on Trump’s Hispanic Advisory Council during the 2016 campaign. Currently he is a member of Trump’s 2020 reelection advisory committee.

Cortes was considered for the Press Secretary job several years ago, before it was ultimately offered to Sanders.

In the eyes of the current Administration, Sanders has done a phenomenal job as Trump’s Press Secretary; the job is considered one of the most difficult in the White House, especially since the press is so hard on the Trump Administration. To be successful in the role, a Press Sectary needs to be quick on his or her feet and have answers for any potential questions that could be posed by hostile journalists.

In the age of Trump, journalists have attempted to use White House press briefings to attain fame. Jim Accosta from CNN has used these events to grandstand and go viral online.

It will certainly be hard to find a candidate as effective as Sanders. However, if anyone could fill her shoes Cortes is a fantastic option. He has been a long-time supporter of the president and has plenty of debate experience from his time on CNN.

The job of the Press Secretary will be especially critical ahead of 2020, as the media attempts to corner Trump and portray him in a negative light.
