Former ICE Director Slams AOC During Heated Clash on Immigration

Tom Homan, the former acting ICE Director, got in an heated exchange with New York’s far-left Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez during Congressional hearings today regarding family separation at the border. AOC attempted to nail Homan as the “author” of the family separation memo.

Homan admitted that although he didn’t write the memo himself, he did make “numerous recommendations” to Homeland Security when it was crafted. His recommendations included a “zero tolerance” policy for those who cross the border illegally.

“Which includes family separation,” Ocasio-Cortez interrupted.

Homan shot back, “The same as it is with every U.S. citizen. Parent [who] gets arrested with a child.”

AOC, who seemed rattled that Homan was fighting back, said, “Zero tolerance was interpreted as the policy that separated the children from their parents.”

Homan said, “If I get arrested for DUI and I have a young child in the car I’m gonna be separated. When I was a police officer in New York and I arrested a father for domestic violence, I separated that father from his family.”

AOC responded, “Mr. Homan, with all due respect, legal asylees are not charged with any crime.”

“When you’re in this country illegally, it’s violation 8, United States Code 1325,” Homan said.

“Seeking asylum is legal,” AOC said, appearing to be flustered.

“If you want to seek asylum, you go through a port of entry,” Homan said. “Do it the legal way. The Attorney General of the United States has made that clear.”

“Okay,” said Ocasio-Cortez. At this point she appeared completely shut down.

The New York progressive seemed to realize she was made to look like a fool during the hearing. Subsequent to the exchange, she tweeted to complain that port of entry were too limited and that there are too many restrictions on how many people can enter through the ports.

Democrats have attempted to paint the Trump Administration in a negative light for separating illegal immigrants from their children, even thought he Obama Administration used the same exact policy. Those on the left continue to complain that Trump is putting “kids in cages.”
