Ilhan Omar Files For Divorce From Husband

New reports are coming in stating that Minnesota Representative Ilhan Omar has filed for divorce from her husband Ahmed Hirsi amidst rumors that she was having an affair with one of her own married aides.

TMZ reported [1] that Omar filed for divorce on Friday in Minnesota from Hirsi, who is also the father of her three children. The filing comes months after Omar was accused of having an affair with her aide Tim Mynett, whose estranged wife alleged in a divorce filing that he had been in a months-long relationship with the Minnesota Democrat.

Omar’s marriage history is quite complicated and has been heavily scrutinized in recent months. She reportedly married Hirsi in a religious ceremony back in 2002, but their marriage was not recognized legally until years later. After having two children together, Omar and Hirsi separated in 2008.

One year later, in 2009, Omar legally married Ahmed Nur Said Elmi. Some have claimed that Elmi was actually her brother and that she married him in an attempt to skirt immigration laws. Omar and Elmi separated in 2011, the same year she got back together with Hirsi, but they did not legally divorce until 2017. Omar and Hirsi had their third child together in 2012, and they legally got married in 2018.

Yahoo News [3] reported that Minnesota Star-Tribune editor Kevin Diaz recently said that Omar has made it difficult for reporters to get to the bottom of claims that she married her brother as well as other claims that she filed tax returns with Hirsi while she was still legally married to Elmi.

“Our public records searches determined that in at least one period after she married Elmi, all three (Omar, Elmi and Hirsi) used the same address in Minnesota,” Diaz said. “It raises questions about the nature of the relationship if she is living with both the person she’s married to and her eventual husband.”

“What’s really made it hard is that she’s been unwilling to address any of these questions. That has fueled the controversy,” he continued. “We quoted her at length to say that these were mere accusations, that they were unfair, and that she shouldn’t have to address them. Be that as may, there was an undisputed instance of her filing her taxes improperly. And if you’re in Congress, you should explain that to your constituents.”

Despite the reports about her alleged affair with Mynett, Omar has denied cheating on her husband with anyone. When recently asked if she was separated from Hirsi or dating anyone else, Omar said, “No I am not.”

“I have no interest in allowing the conversation about my personal life to continue and so I have no desire to discuss it,” she said.
