Barack And Michelle Obama Drop Nearly $12 Million On New Martha’s Vineyard Mansion

Former President Barack Obama and his wife Michelle just bought a 7,000-square-foot mansion in Martha’s Vineyard for $11.75 million, according to new reports.

Fox News reported that the purchase was recorded on Wednesday with the local Registry of Deeds. The home has reportedly been on the market since 2015, and the Obamas paid half the original asking price for it. The sellers of the mansion have been identified as Wycliffe Grousebeck, owner of the Boston Celtics basketball team, and his wife Corinne Basler Grousbeck.

Located in the Edgartown section on the eastern end of the island, the house sits on a property of more than 29 acres. The mansion includes seven bedrooms, eight and a half bathrooms and several stone fireplaces, as well as a two-car garage, a barn and a swimming pool.

Barack and Michelle reportedly rented the home for the summer, and they made an official offer on it in August. This comes after they already purchased a nine-bedroom house in Washington, paying a reported $8.1 million for it.

The Obamas have not been short on cash in the slightest since leaving the White House, with both of them securing lucrative deals. Michelle was given a $65 million advance for her memoir “Becoming,” while the couple also negotiated a $50 million deal with Netflix to develop programming.

On top of that, Michelle commands a speaking fee of $225,000, while both she and Barack are said to have a net worth of $135 million.

Yahoo News reported that Michelle opened up this past week about how emotional it was for her and her husband to drop off their youngest daughter Sasha at college at the University of Michigan this fall.

“It was of course a little emotional to drop Sasha off at college,” Michelle confessed. “It’s an adjustment to see each other for a weekend here, a holiday break there, but the moments we do spend together feel extra special because of it.”

Michelle added that she and Barack were hands-on throughout the college process, wanting to make sure that Sasha’s experience was “as normal as possible, given [their] family’s circumstances.”

“We were there, just like most parents, helping her unpack and make her dorm room feel like home,” Michelle said. “But by and large, we let her take care of herself. As a parent, one of the most important things we can give our children is the freedom to find their own way in the world.”

Though Michelle admitted that she sometimes wishes she could go back in time, she added that she is excited to see what the future holds for her daughters Sasha and Malia.

“Barack and I try to make sure that our daughters know that there’s no limit to what they can be or what they can achieve,” Michelle explained. “They don’t learn that if their parents treat them like delicate little ornaments, set aside so they won’t break. Girls need to have the chance to create and  explore and skin their knees from time to time, too.”
