During a new interview this week, former First Lady Michelle Obama proudly stated that she and her husband Barack intend to remain involved in politics “forever.”

Daily Mail reported that during an interview with “Today” show host Jenna Bush Hager, Michelle said that she and Barack are waiting to see who wins the Democratic nomination in 2020 before they offer support. Michelle added that she won’t presume that a candidate wants an endorsement unless they ask for it specifically.

“When it comes to the candidate, we have to wait and see who’s the victor and then part of it is waiting to see, do they want our help? Do they want my help?” she said. “I don’t assume, I didn’t think I would sell a book so I’m still that person. So I’ll wait to be asked.”

For now, Michelle said that she is focused on encouraging people to vote, which she sees as a good way to stay involved in politics “forever.”

“One of the biggest ways I think I can help is to make sure that people understand the importance of voting and the power of voting in a democracy,” Michelle said. “That’s one way that we will be involved forever.”

While she clearly intends to stay involved in politics, Michelle had said in a previous interview that she wants to let the 2020 Democratic presidential race play out before she throws support behind a candidate.

“Where I’m at right now is that we should see anybody who feels the passion to get in this race, we need them in there. I think the process will play itself out,” Michelle said. “I haven’t really been paying attention and looking at the candidates. I think there’s just a lot of noise and talk, but it’s still pretty early. Let’s see who wants to roll up their sleeves and get in the race. That’s what the primary process is for.”

Many have speculated that Michelle herself will enter the 2020 race, as some polls have shown that she could be a frontrunner if she decided to do so. Michelle herself, however, has resisted all calls to do so.

“There are so many ways to improve this country and build a better world, and I keep doing plenty of them, from working with young people to helping families lead healthier lives,” Michelle said back in August. “But sitting behind the desk in the Oval Office will never be one of them. It’s just not for me.”
