Prince Harry and his wife Meghan Markle will not be meeting with President Donald Trump when he visits Buckingham Palace today during his two-day NATO summit in London.
The Daily Caller reported that Trump is set to attend a reception hosted by Queen Elizabeth on Tuesday that will be attended by other royals including Kate Middleton, Prince Charles and Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall. Kate’s husband Prince William would undoubtedly be in attendance as well, but he is currently on a four day tour of Kuwait and Oman.
This visit comes as Harry and Meghan are taking a break from royal duties after receiving a barrage of negative press in the past few months.
“The Duke and Duchess have a full schedule of engagements and commitments until mid-November, after which they will be taking some much-needed family time,” a royal source said in what seems to be the excuse as to why Meghan and Harry won’t be meeting with Trump.
Objective reporting for the educated American.
Before marrying Harry, Meghan was a Hollywood star who was open about her liberal views. In the lead-up to the 2016 presidential election, Meghan was not shy about bashing Trump in the press.
“Yes, of course, Trump is divisive, think about female voters alone, right? I think it was in 2012 the Republican Party lost the female vote by 12 points; that is a huge number and with as misogynistic as Trump is, and so vocal about it, that is a huge chunk of it,” Meghan said months before the 2016 election. “You’re not just voting for a woman if it’s Hillary because she’s a woman, but certainly because Trump has made it easy to see that you don’t really want that kind of world that he’s painting.”
When Trump visited the royal family in June, Meghan did not meet with him, claiming that she needed to remain on maternity leave with her newborn son. However, she then raised eyebrows when she resurfaced at the Trooping of the Colour celebration just one week after Trump left, indicating that she was indeed healthy enough to meet with him all along.
“I’m told that there are no plans for Meghan to meet President Trump,” royal expert Dustin Larcombe said before the visit. “Not as a snub because – how shall we say – it’s a quite convenient period of maternity leave so she won’t be working. The fact she’s on maternity leave obviously gives her an excuse.”
Queen Elizabeth has spent decades remaining politically neutral at all times, so it has come as a surprise to many that Harry and Meghan have been so open about their liberal views.
