Michelle Obama and Laura Bush Team Up to Support WHO, Amid Trump Criticism

Former First Ladies Michelle Obama and Laura Bush teamed up for a video in support of the World Health Organization–an organization that has come under fire by President Donald Trump for being pro-China.

The women made videos in support of the organization from their own homes, on the Global Citizen “One World: Together at Home” televised concert special. The women took turns speaking.

Bush said, “Michelle and I are thrilled to join you tonight in your homes for this special program.”

Obama said, “We’ve had the profound privilege of getting to know you and your families. Your hopes and your struggles, and your triumphs.”

Bush said, “The spirit and courage of the American people is most evident in times of crisis, and during this period of physical separation, we’ve never been closer. Not just in our great country, but tonight we stand with the people of the world.”

Both of the women expressed thanks and gratitude to healthcare workers and other essential employees putting their lives at risk during the pandemic. The women mentioned pharmacists, veterinarians, sanitation workers and those working in grocery stores or delivering food and supplies to homes. Bush said, “You’re the fabric of our country and your strength will carry us through this crisis.”

Obama concluded by saying, “The coming days will not be easy, but this global family of ours is strong. We will continue to be here for one another and we will get through this crisis. Together. Thank you.”

Both former First Ladies have continued initiatives to help women and girls around the world after leaving the White House. Mrs. Bush heads the George W. Bush Institute’s Women’s Initiative, which assists with healthcare, education, and economic opportunity. Mrs. Obama works with the Obama Foundation to further similar causes and empower women.

The two women have had a good relationship, even though their husbands represented different political parties. During a 2016 event at the George W. Bush Presidential Center in Dallas, Mrs. Obama said by video, “As you all know, I deeply admire and respect Laura. And I think that it’s important to collaborate with people you admire and respect, regardless of party. That’s what makes a democracy work, truly.”
