Country music legends Dolly Parton and Kenny Rogers were friends and collaborators for decades, and the chemistry they had with one another was palpable.
There was one reason they never dated, however, and they revealed what it was during an interview in 2017.
“I’m a believer that tension is better if you keep it than if you satisfy it,” Rogers joked while appearing on the Today [1] show. “And then secondly, she said no to me.”
“I’m not his type,” Parton added before explaining that the real reason the two never got together was that he felt more like family to her than a romantic partner.
“Nah. You know what, we were almost like brother and sister. And it would almost be like incest. So we just never went there.”
Rogers tragically passed away back in March at the age of 81. Afterwards, Parton paid tribute to her longtime friend on social media.
“You never know how much you love somebody until they’re gone,” Parton wrote in a Facebook [2] post. “I’ve had so many wonderful years and wonderful times with my friend Kenny, but above all the music and the success I loved him as a wonderful man and a true friend. So you be safe with God and just know that I will always love you.”
“I loved Kenny with all my heart,” Parton added in a touching video. “My heart’s broken, and a big ol’ chunk of it has gone with him today.”
“I just happened to have this picture when I woke up this morning of us,” she continued.
“I walked out and thought, ‘Well, maybe I’ll hold that up for everybody,’ so I know you’re sad as I am but God bless you Kenny. Fly high, straight into the arms of God. And to the rest of you, keep the faith.”

After Rogers’ death, his family released a statement saying that he died of natural causes.
“The Rogers family is sad to announce that Kenny Rogers passed away last night at 10:25PM at the age of 81,” his family said in a statement [5]. “Rogers passed away peacefully at home from natural causes under the care of hospice and surrounded by his family.”
