Before Meghan Markle was a royal duchess, she was one of many openly-liberal Hollywood stars who publicly spoke out against Donald Trump in the lead-up to the 2016 election.
Days after Meghan’s tell-all interview with Oprah Winfrey, one of her Trump-bashing interviews has resurfaced, and it says a lot about what her political views are behind the scenes.
In an interview promoting her television show “Suits” months before the 2016 presidential election, Meghan made no secret of who she planned to vote for in that election.
“Yes, of course, Trump is divisive, think about female voters alone, right? I think it was in 2012 the Republican Party lost the female vote by 12 points; that is a huge number and with as misogynistic as Trump is, and so vocal about it, that is a huge chunk of it,” Meghan told television host Larry Wilmore.
“You’re not just voting for a woman if it’s Hillary because she’s a woman, but certainly because Trump has made it easy to see that you don’t really want that kind of world that he’s painting,” she added
As a member of the liberal elite of Hollywood, Meghan was used to being able to vocalize her leftwing political views as much as she liked with no consequences whatsoever. This may have become a problem for her when she married Prince Harry, as members of the British royal family are supposed to remain political neutral at all times.
Though Meghan did not specifically mention politics in her interview with Oprah, she made no secret of the fact that she struggled with not being able to use her voice in the same way that she did when she was a Hollywood actress. In fact, Meghan claimed that she grew to feel so isolated as a royal that she felt suicidal at one point during her pregnancy with her son Archie.
“As an adult who lived a really independent life to then go into this construct that is different than I think what people expect it to be, it’s really liberating to be able to have the right and the privilege in some ways to be able to say ‘yes, I’m ready to talk,'” Meghan said.
“We have the ability to make our own choices in a way that I couldn’t have said ‘yes’ to you then. That wasn’t my choice to make,” she added.

Since leaving the royal family, Meghan and Harry have signed multi-million dollar deals to create content for Netflix and Spotify. Given her past comments about Trump, it’s not difficult to surmise that the projects that Meghan will choose to work on will likely be liberal in nature.
