Meghan Markle Won’t Be Attending Prince Philip’s Funeral

Yesterday, we reported that Prince Philip, the 99 year-old husband of Queen Elizabeth, had passed away at the age of 99. Now, it’s been revealed that his granddaughter-in-law Meghan Markle will not be attending his funeral, even though her husband Prince Harry will be going.

Omid Scobie, co-author of “Finding Freedom: Harry and Meghan and the Making of a Modern Royal Family,” told Entertainment Tonight that Harry “will do everything he can” to travel to the United Kingdom for his grandfather’s funeral.

He added that Meghan would like to attend, but she did not receive medical clearance from her doctor to do so, as she is currently pregnant with her and Harry’s second child. The baby girl that she is carrying is due early this summer.

Scobie said that Harry was “so close” to his grandfather, adding that Philip’s death will be “a very difficult time for him.”

“Not only is he many miles away from his family and the queen… he is also not able to be immediately part of what is going on over here in the U.K.,” Scobie said of Harry. “The royal family has gotten used to the sort of digital means of communication and he will no doubt be in touch with the family.”

The Queen has entered an eight day period of mourning in the wake of the death of her husband of 73 years.

“We’ll see the queen’s royal mourning period followed by all members of the royal family,” Scobie said. “If there are any appearances of them in the days or weeks ahead, we will see them dressed appropriately in black… All royal engagements over the next eight days at least have been put to one side.”

He added that during this time, the royals will focus on “coming together as a family and really supporting each other.”

Philip’s death was announced by the palace on Friday morning.

“It is with deep sorrow that Her Majesty The Queen has announced the death of her beloved husband, His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh,” the palace said. “His Royal Highness passed away peacefully this morning at Windsor Castle.”
