Over the weekend, Joe Biden became the first president ever to issue a proclamation of Indigenous People’s Day, which the “woke” left is trying to replace Columbus Day with.

“For generations, Federal policies systematically sought to assimilate and displace Native people and eradicate Native cultures,” Biden wrote in his proclamation, according to USA Today. “Today, we recognize Indigenous peoples’ resilience and strength as well as the immeasurable positive impact that they have made on every aspect of American society

Biden issued a separate proclamation for Columbus Day in which he praised the role that Italians have played in American culture. However, he also referenced the violence that the left has accused Columbus and his fellow explorers of bringing to America in that era.

“Today, we also acknowledge the painful history of wrongs and atrocities that many European explorers inflicted on Tribal Nations and Indigenous communities,” Biden wrote. “It is a measure of our greatness as a Nation that we do not seek to bury these shameful episodes of our past — that we face them honestly, we bring them to the light, and we do all we can to address them.”

This is a clear difference from how former President Donald Trump handled the holiday last year. Ignoring the concept of Indigenous People’s Day, Trump defended “intrepid heroes” like Columbus in his 2020 proclamation of the holiday.

“Sadly, in recent years, radical activists have sought to undermine Christopher Columbus’ legacy,” Trump said at the time. “These extremists seek to replace discussion of his vast contributions with talk of failings, his discoveries with atrocities, and his achievements with transgressions.”

Hillary Kempenich, an artist and member of the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa, was quick to celebrate Biden marking Indigenous People’s Day.

“This was completely unexpected. Even though we’ve been talking about it and wanting it for so long,” she told ABC News. “I’m kind of overwhelmed with joy.”

White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki claimed that Biden “felt strongly” about recognizing Indigenous Peoples Day. When asked if Biden is trying to end Columbus Day as a federal holiday, she replied, “I don’t have any predictions at this point.”

John Echohawk, executive director of the Native American Rights Fund, spoke out as well to say that Biden recognizing Indigenous People’s Day was an important step.

“Big changes happen from each small step, and we hope this administration intends to continue making positive steps towards shaping a brighter future for all citizens,” Echohawak said.

This is yet another example of the left trying to erase the history of this great nation.
