Colleges In U.S. Ditch Columbus Day – Celebrate ‘Indigenous Peoples’ Day’ Instead

Many colleges have gone full “woke” today and are ditching Columbus Day to instead celebrate Indigenous Peoples’ Day. This comes days after Joe Biden became the first president to issue a proclamation for Indigenous Peoples’ Day.

“For generations, Federal policies systematically sought to assimilate and displace Native people and eradicate Native cultures,” Biden wrote in his proclamation, according to Fox News [1]. “Today, we recognize Indigenous peoples’ resilience and strength as well as the immeasurable positive impact that they have made on every aspect of American society.”

Boston University is celebrating Indigenous Peoples’ Day for the first time, marking the “accomplishments of indigenous, Native American and First Nations people.” The school even put together a reading list on its website of books to honor this holiday.

The elite Stanford University has launched a “land acknowledgment [5]” website, honoring relationships with Native peoples. This is meant to encourage the use of the land acknowledgment at events to celebrate ties to the Muwekma Ohlone and other Native communities.

The University of Buffalo put forth a similar proclamation, claiming that Indigenous Peoples’ Day is meant to honor the Indigenous peoples who were the first inhabitants of North America.

“UB acknowledges that our campuses operate on land that is the traditional territory of the Seneca Nation, a member of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, and the region remains the home of the Haudenosaunee people,” the university said in a statement [6]. “Further, we responsibly acknowledge the continuing impact of settler colonialism on the Haudenosaunee and their territories.”

Wunk Sheek, an Indigenous student organization at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, is hosting a one-session powwow tonight at 7pm for Indigenous Peoples’ Day.

The Denmos Museum Center, which is at Northwestern Michigan College, is offering free admission and an outdoor event organized by Todd Parker, the Native American success coach, and members of NMC’s Native American Student Organization.

Biden also issued a separate proclamation for Columbus Day in which he shamed Christopher Columbus and the other explorers who discovered America.

“Today, we also acknowledge the painful history of wrongs and atrocities that many European explorers inflicted on Tribal Nations and Indigenous communities,” Biden wrote. “It is a measure of our greatness as a Nation that we do not seek to bury these shameful episodes of our past — that we face them honestly, we bring them to the light, and we do all we can to address them.”

In their quest to erase history and shame America, “woke” liberals have dubbed Columbus Day to be “offensive.” It’s only a matter of time before they go all-out in officially cancelling Columbus Day and replacing the national holiday with Indigenous Peoples’ Day.
