Newt Gingrich Calls Out ‘Absurdity’ Of 1/6 Committee – ‘Americans Should Be Insulted’

"Americans should be insulted" by it.

The former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich is calling out the “absurdity” of the January 6 committee, going so far as to say that “Americans should be insulted” by it.

While appearing on Fox News on Monday morning, Gingrich issued a brutal warning about the precedent being set by this committee, describing it as a “show trial” that should be seen as an insult to American voters. He said this in response to reports that the committee had asked to interview him.

“My attorneys are working all that out,” Gingrich said. “I’m not directly engaged with the committee, but I will say there’s never been a more blatant misuse of the Justice Department this close to an election.”

“You know, the ground rule used to be that 60 days out, they stopped all the stuff precisely not to try to influence an election,” he continued. “Instead, you have a deliberate targeting process underway to intimidate Republican donors, Republican candidates, and even Republican lawyers. This is as close to a police state tactic as we’ve ever seen in this country. And, of course, this is totally inappropriate.”

Not stopping there, Gingrich proceeded to double down.

“It’s not really a congressional committee: It’s a show trial in the Stalinist tradition,” he concluded. “They’re apparently sitting down this week with their Hollywood producer. Think about this: They are sitting down with their Hollywood producer to plan the next two months. This is an absurdity. The American people should be insulted that these people think they’re stupid enough to fall for this kind of thing.”

This comes after it was reported that the committee believes that Gingrich was part of the effort to say that the election was stolen from Donald Trump.

“Former House Speaker Gingrich appears to have been involved in some of the planning around the counterfeit electors scheme, and efforts to substitute a fraudulent process for the actual process,” said a member of the select committee, according to The Hill.

Rep. Zoe Lofgren (D-CA), who is also a member of the committee, claimed that Gingrich campaigned to keep Trump in the White House even after Congress voted to certify Joe Biden’s win.

“We also have information about his efforts to get the election overturned, even after the riot on the 6th,” she said.

Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-CA), another member of the committee, recently talked to TIME Magazine about what they have planned next.

“I would expect at least one hearing on the continuing threats to democracy in America and what needs to be done legislatively at the federal level and at other levels of government in order to fortify ourselves against coups, insurrections, political violence, and attempts to sabotage elections,” Raskin said. “I would hope that we have as thorough a discussion about these structural problems as we have had about the individual dangers created by Donald Trump and his movement.”

Many Americans will certainly agree with Gingrich’s assessment of this committee, which a lot of people rightly see as nothing more than an attempt to shame Trump and the millions of Americans who voted for him. This nonsense has gone way too far.
