The book, authored by Columbia University professor emeritus Rashid Khalidi, describes the establishment of Israel as an act of “colonialism” met with Palestinian “resistance.”

Khalidi, of Palestinian and Lebanese descent, criticizes both Israeli policies and the United States’ historical support for Israel in his book.

He refers to former President Donald Trump’s administration as a “mouthpiece” for Israel and accuses Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of leading “the most extreme government” in the country’s history.

The book argues that modern Palestinian history is best understood as a colonial struggle, highlighting what the author describes as discriminatory Israeli policies and ongoing resistance.

Khalidi also critiques U.S. media coverage of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, asserting that it disproportionately favors Israel.

When contacted for comment, Khalidi told The New York Post, “My reaction is that this is 4 years too late,” in reference to Biden’s purchase of the book. Khalidi added that his response was not intended for publication.

Khalidi’s book, published in early 2020, explores the Israeli-Palestinian conflict through a critical lens.

It addresses historical events such as the First Intifada, which Khalidi describes as a “victory for the Palestinians,” and the Second Intifada, which he deems a “setback” for the Palestinian national movement.

The book calls for “a path based on equality and justice” to resolve the conflict, while advocating for reconciliation between Israelis and Palestinians.

Khalidi also critiques Trump-era policies, including the relocation of the U.S. embassy to Jerusalem and the recognition of Israel’s annexation of the Golan Heights.

The book frames these decisions as moves that eliminated any semblance of impartiality in U.S. diplomacy regarding the conflict.

Joe Biden, who has publicly identified as a Zionist, has long expressed support for the state of Israel. “You don’t have to be a Jew to be a Zionist. I’m a Zionist,” Biden said during a meeting with Israeli President Isaac Herzog earlier this month.

However, Biden has faced criticism for his handling of recent conflicts in the region.

While he visited Israel in the aftermath of the Hamas attacks on October 7, 2023, his administration temporarily paused shipments of 2,000-pound munitions to Israel due to concerns over civilian casualties in Gaza.

Pro-Palestinian activists have consistently criticized Biden, dubbing him “Genocide Joe” during protests, including a November demonstration at the White House.

Thousands of protesters gathered outside the White House last November, some chanting, “F—k Joe Biden” and others painting the nickname “Genocide Joe” on the gates.

Biden’s appearance in Nantucket coincided with ongoing U.S. efforts to mediate the release of hostages held by Hamas in Gaza.

His administration recently announced a ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hezbollah, part of a broader strategy to de-escalate violence in the region.

The president’s purchase of Khalidi’s book has sparked conversations about his views on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

The White House has not commented on whether the book was purchased or gifted during the visit.

Biden was in Nantucket for the island’s annual Christmas tree lighting, dining with family at the Brotherhood of Thieves restaurant before visiting the bookstore.
