Tom Homan, President Donald Trump’s border czar, issued a warning to New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy (D) after the governor admitted to harboring an illegal immigrant in his home.
Homan stated that Murphy could face prosecution for knowingly concealing an undocumented individual, a violation of federal immigration law.
Murphy made the remarks during a public event with Blue Wave New Jersey, where he openly challenged federal immigration authorities.

The governor claimed that New Jersey was leading the charge against efforts to reform birthright citizenship and declared that he had personally provided shelter to an individual with unresolved immigration status.
“There is someone in our broader universe whose immigration status is not yet at the point that they are trying to get it to, and we said, ‘You know what? Let’s have her live at our house above our garage, and good luck to the feds who are coming in to try to get her,’” Murphy said.

Fox News host Sean Hannity addressed the governor’s comments in a segment on his show, questioning whether Murphy had knowingly admitted to violating federal immigration law.
“The governor of New Jersey, Phil Murphy, basically admitted he knew someone who didn’t have full documentation and that he was hiding her over his garage. Your comment on all of that?” Hannity asked Homan.
Homan responded by saying the remarks would be taken seriously.
“I think the governor is pretty foolish … I took note of it. I won’t let it go. We’ll look into it,” Homan said.
“And if he’s knowingly harboring or concealing an illegal alien, that’s a violation of Title 8, United States Code 1324,” he continued. “I would seek prosecution, or the Secretary would seek prosecution.”
“So maybe he’s bluffing; maybe he’s not. We’ll deal with that,” Homan added.
The former acting director of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) also addressed the broader issue of sanctuary cities, highlighting their impact on public safety.
“And as far as suing sanctuary cities—well, get in line, because the Trump administration is already doing that. Sanctuary cities are sanctuaries for criminals,” Homan said.
He specifically pointed to the case of Laken Riley, a Georgia nursing student who was murdered by an illegal immigrant in early 2024.
Homan argued that sanctuary policies directly contributed to her death by allowing criminal aliens to avoid federal detention.

“Take New York City as an example. If they had handed over the killer of Laken Riley when he was arrested in New York City for endangering a child, he would have been in jail and never would have killed Laken Riley,” Homan stated.
“Sanctuary cities are responsible for the deaths of thousands—thousands—of young children throughout my career,” he added.
Homan emphasized that the Trump administration intends to take action against jurisdictions that refuse to comply with federal immigration enforcement.
“And we’re going to sue them. … Look, we’ve got the Supreme Court. That’s what President Trump wanted to do. He will end sanctuary cities,” he said.
