Cory Bowman, the half-brother of Vice President J.D. Vance, secured a second-place finish in Tuesday’s Cincinnati mayoral primary, advancing to the general election in November, as reported by The Western Journal.

The political newcomer and local pastor earned a boost from Vance on election day, receiving a public endorsement from the vice president on social media.

“Hey Cincinnati! My brother Cory Bowman is running for mayor and is on the ballot today for the primary,” Vance wrote on X. “He’s a good guy with a heart for serving his community. Get out there and vote for him!”

According to WCPO-TV, Bowman received 2,894 votes in the three-way primary. Democratic incumbent Mayor Aftab Pureval led the field with 18,505 votes. Republican Brian Frank finished third with 1,022 votes and was eliminated.

Bowman, founding pastor of The River Church in Cincinnati, credited his half-brother’s public service with motivating his entry into politics. NPR reported that Bowman decided to run for office after attending Vance’s vice-presidential inauguration in January.

“But when it comes to this race, we are running for Cincinnati,” Bowman told WVXU-TV.

“I need people to see that — that our job isn’t to copy and paste what’s going on in the nation. Our job is to say, however the nation’s going, what’s going to be best for the city of Cincinnati?”

His campaign is centered on public safety, fiscal discipline, and infrastructure improvements. He has emphasized budgeting principles that avoid debt and prioritize city needs.

“Your principles are, you are not going to take on more debt, you’re not going to take on more burden for the city,” Bowman said on Tuesday. “And then also, your priorities are going to dictate what you spend the money on.”

According to NPR, Bowman also advocates for safeguarding the unborn and protecting children from domestic violence, sexual abuse, and trafficking.

While he described Vance as “an incredible role model,” he added that the vice president is “not a political counselor to me.”

Bowman now prepares to face Pureval in the November general election. Pureval, who previously served as a special assistant U.S. attorney and Hamilton County clerk of courts, is considered a rising Democratic figure.

NBC News noted that he won the 2021 mayor’s race with nearly 66% of the vote and has previously mounted a congressional campaign.

The city remains heavily Democratic. In the 2023 municipal election, all nine City Council seats were won by candidates endorsed by the Democratic Party. All nine seats will appear on the November ballot alongside the mayoral race.
