Actress Olivia Munn has alleged that a director she worked with during her time on HBO’s The Newsroom attempted to derail her acting career following on-set disputes during the show’s run, as reported by Page Six.
Munn, 45, made the claims during a recent appearance on the Armchair Expert podcast, stating that her manager once alerted her to negative feedback being circulated about her in Hollywood casting circles.
According to Munn, the remarks came from a director who worked on Seasons 2 and 3 of The Newsroom, which aired between 2012 and 2014.

“Hey, you’re gonna get the role,” Munn recalled her representative saying.
“But first, I guess there’s another director who they know and he says that on The Newsroom, you were late all the time and really combative.”
Munn denied the allegations of tardiness and conflict, attributing the criticism to creative disagreements she had with the director regarding her character, Sloan Sabbith, particularly surrounding her romantic storyline with Thomas Sadoski’s character, Don Keefer.
“He kept trying to force me to carry that storyline — only on my side,” Munn stated. She added that the director frequently asked her to portray flirtatious behavior, including requests to “smile” or “kiss” her co-star, even during scenes where her character was performing her job.

In one example, Munn recalled working with a Bloomberg machine for a scene when the director interrupted with, “Can you look out at him and smile?” She described the request as inconsistent with her character’s role and tone in the scene.
Another disagreement occurred when her character discovered Keefer’s involvement in insider trading. Munn said the director minimized the gravity of the moment, telling her, “I don’t think that you’re that angry at him. It’s kind of funny.”
Munn said she pushed back frequently and eventually refused a direction outright. She recalled the director’s response:
“It’s my job as a director to see all the different colors of the rainbow and you are looking at only one color.”
When asked what that meant, the director reportedly told her, “Really forceful and strong.”
Munn said she replied, “Great, that’s what I wanted,” and walked away.
Munn stated that the director’s remarks followed her into other auditions, prompting her representatives to clarify the situation when future casting questions arose. She said she ultimately landed the role in question, but the experience stayed with her.
“Just because of our conflicts of how we approached a role, he wanted to ruin my chances of getting anything else,” she said.

According to IMDb, The Newsroom had 11 male directors during its three-season run. Munn did not name the director she was referring to, and her representatives did not respond to media requests for further comment.
