Indiana State Senator Michael Bohacek said Friday that he will refuse to vote for the state’s redistricting plan after President Donald Trump criticized Minnesota Governor Tim Walz and U.S. Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) in a Thanksgiving night post on X.

The redistricting proposal is backed by President Trump and could add two Republican seats to the U.S. House of Representatives in the 2026 midterm elections.

Late Thursday, President Trump posted that he plans to halt all immigration — legal and illegal — from third-world countries and from individuals who harbor negative views toward the United States.

In the middle of the post, Trump criticized leaders in Minnesota in connection with concerns over the state’s Somali population.

Trump wrote, “The seriously retarded Governor of Minnesota, Tim Walz, does nothing, either through fear, incompetence, or both, while the worst ‘Congressman/woman’ in our Country, Ilhan Omar, always wrapped in her swaddling hijab, and who probably came into the U.S.A. illegally in that you are not allowed to marry your brother.”

Hours after the post, Bohacek wrote on Facebook that he would vote against the redistricting plan. He said his decision was based on Trump’s choice of language.

“Many of you have asked my position on redistricting. I have been an unapologetic advocate for people with intellectual disabilities since the birth of my second daughter. Those of you that don’t know me or my family might not know that my daughter has Down Syndrome,” Bohacek wrote.

“This is not the first time our president has used these insulting and derogatory references and his choices of words have consequences. I will be voting NO on redistricting, perhaps he can use the next 10 months to convince voters that his policies and behavior deserve a congressional majority.”

The post prompted immediate backlash from Republican voters.

Florida’s Voice contributor Eric Daugherty responded, “What a freaking child. Primary this weak ‘Republican.’ Outrageous. Grandstanding when our nation is at stake? Caving to Gavin Newsom and the Democrat Country-Destroyers is your play because you’re OFFENDED?”

Critics also referenced Bohacek’s past drunk driving case.

Bohacek, who represents Michiana Shores, was involved in a drunk driving incident in Michigan City.

A witness reported seeing him drinking from an open container and stumbling out of his vehicle in a Panda Express parking lot before he drove off in a Dodge Charger.

Police stopped him for driving 62 mph in a 45 mph zone on U.S. 20.

A blood test at a hospital showed a blood alcohol level of 0.28 percent, more than three times the legal limit of 0.08 percent.

Under Indiana’s legislative immunity provision, lawmakers cannot be arrested during the General Assembly session except for treason, felonies, or breaches of peace.

Bohacek was not arrested at the scene and was driven home.

After the session concluded, formal charges were filed in May 2025, including operating while intoxicated with endangerment and operating with a blood alcohol content of 0.15 percent or higher.

In August 2025, he accepted a plea agreement and pleaded guilty to one misdemeanor operating while intoxicated charge.

Bohacek’s decision on redistricting could influence the balance of power in the U.S. House next November.

Several blue states have implemented new maps that strengthen Democratic positions, while Republican states such as Texas, Missouri, and North Carolina have advanced redistricting efforts to address census “errors” that they argue undercounted red states and benefited Democrat-controlled states.
