President Trump Says MAGA Base Backs Iran War as Poll Shows Strong Support

President Donald Trump said Thursday that his Make America Great Again supporters strongly back his military campaign against Iran, arguing that the effort is necessary to prevent Tehran from obtaining nuclear weapons, as reported [1] by The New York Post.

Speaking during an interview on Fox News’ “The Five [2],” Trump said his political base supports the conflict as it approaches the one-month mark. The president framed the campaign as a matter of national security and deterrence.

“MAGA loves the fact that they’re not going to have somebody with a nuclear bomb over their head,” Trump said on the program.

He contrasted that support with criticism from others, adding, “We have people that are weak or stupid or low-IQ people that don’t mind having Iran have a nuclear weapon. The MAGA people are smart.”

The president cited polling data to support his claims, pointing to a recent NBC News survey that found strong backing among MAGA-aligned Republicans.

According to the poll, 90% of respondents in that group support the war effort, while 5% oppose it.

During the interview, Fox News host Greg Gutfeld asked Trump how he would respond to voters who may have supported him based on expectations of avoiding new conflicts abroad.

“Let’s say they voted for you on the assumption of no wars, and then this happens, and it’s inconsistent with their wishes. What would you say to them?” Gutfeld asked.

Trump responded by emphasizing the threat posed by Iran’s leadership and ideology.

“You can’t let a madman, or you can’t let a mad ideology have a nuclear weapon,” he said.

The president also described the military action as a demonstration of U.S. strength, saying it serves both national and international interests.

Washington D.C., USA – May 30, 2025 – President Donald Trump leaves the White House for a trip to Pennsylvania on May 30, 2025.

“In order to keep our country great, I said, ‘We’re going to take a fairly short detour. We’re going to show everybody that there’s nobody even coming close to us militarily — nobody even comes close. We have the greatest weapons. We have the strongest military,’” Trump said.

While Trump pointed to strong support among MAGA-aligned Republicans, polling data indicates some division within the broader GOP.

The NBC survey, which was also analyzed by CNN, found that 54% of Republicans who do not identify as part of the MAGA movement support the strikes against Iran, while approximately 36% oppose them.

Trump dismissed the significance of that divide, arguing that the MAGA movement represents the majority of the Republican Party.

“I think MAGA’s almost the whole Republican Party, you want to know the truth,” he said.

“Almost every single person that I endorse wins.”

The president also suggested that his standing with voters has improved during the conflict, citing what he described as strong polling support.

“I think I’m more popular than I ever have been. Look, when he heard 100%, he said, ‘I’ve never seen a poll like this. This is the craziest poll I’ve ever seen.’ It was 100% of the people.”

“And the reason is, they like that I’m protecting our country from lunatics with a nuclear weapon.”

The comments come as the administration continues its military operations against Iran and as debate persists within political circles about the scope and duration of U.S. involvement.
