Cruise Ship Recovers Five Bodies During Rescue Operation in the Mediterranean [WATCH]

Crew members aboard the Sapphire Princess cruise ship carried out a recovery operation in the western Mediterranean Sea that resulted in the retrieval of five bodies during a three-hour mission, according to passenger accounts and a statement from the cruise line, as reported [1] by The New York Post.

The incident occurred Tuesday evening as the ship, which was traveling between the coasts of Spain and North Africa, altered course after an orange object was spotted in the water at approximately 6 p.m. Passengers were informed that the object, later identified as a lifejacket, prompted the ship to investigate.

Video captured by passengers showed crew members recovering a body from the water and bringing it aboard using a lifeboat. Medical personnel examined the individual before moving the body to a secure area of the ship. The vessel then resumed its course shortly before 7 p.m.

Less than an hour later, at approximately 7:47 p.m., another lifejacket was seen in the water. The ship again redirected its course, leading to the recovery of a second body. Additional footage showed three more bodies being retrieved as the operation continued.

The ship’s captain later announced that five bodies had been recovered in total.

A passenger who witnessed the events described the atmosphere on board as subdued and said crew members worked to maintain order.

“It was very sad to watch. I was shaking inside,” the passenger said.

“The crew were very good at keeping everyone calm, but everyone was shocked.”

The passenger added, “From what I saw I think they were migrants.”

“The crew treated them with respect and we were all offered counselling,” the passenger said.

The cruise ship, which was carrying more than 3,000 passengers, continued its scheduled route after the recovery mission. It later docked in Cartagena on Wednesday.

The voyage began on April 19 from a port near Rome and is part of a 14-day itinerary that is scheduled to conclude in Copenhagen on May 3.

Princess Cruises confirmed the sequence of events in a statement, noting that the ship immediately responded after spotting a lifejacket in the water.

“Princess Cruises confirms that on April 21, Sapphire Princess, while at sea en route to Cartagena, Spain, observed an orange inflatable lifejacket in the water. The vessel immediately altered course to investigate and, upon arrival on scene, deployed its Fast Rescue Boat,” the company said.

“Five deceased individuals were recovered by the Sapphire Princess crew members and coordinated efforts with the Maritime Rescue Coordination Center (MRCC). The individuals involved are not guests or crew of Sapphire Princess.”

“We extend our sincere condolences for this loss and are grateful to our crew for their swift response and efforts to render assistance,” the statement added.

Passengers said the incident was unlike anything they had experienced during previous cruises. One individual noted that even frequent travelers aboard the ship had not encountered a similar situation.

The recovery effort involved coordination with maritime authorities, and no further details about the identities of the individuals have been released.
