Commentator Britt Hughes addressed the response from media outlets and political figures following a deadly shooting in Shreveport, Louisiana, arguing that early reporting framed the incident in a way that shifted after additional details were released.
Hughes pointed to initial coverage of the shooting, which reported that eight children were killed, and said the incident was described at the time as a mass shooting.
“The leftist media and all of their favorite politicians started absolutely salivating Sunday afternoon over what they called a mass shooting in Louisiana. That was the framing a mass shooting, at least in the beginning.”
He referenced early reports from national outlets, including NBC News, which reported that eight children were among the victims in what was described as an extensive mass shooting in Shreveport.
“NBC News reported eight children were killed in an extensive mass shooting in Shreveport, Louisiana. Police say, and cue the gun grabbers.”
Hughes also cited reactions from several Democratic officials following the initial reports. She referenced statements made by California Governor Gavin Newsom, New York Congressman Dan Goldman, and House Democratic Whip Katherine Clark, who responded publicly to the incident.
“Gavin Newsom, out in California, tweeted, this is a moral failure. It’s preventable. How many more kids have to be killed before the NRA stops paying off politicians?”
Hughes said Goldman and Clark also issued statements linking the incident to broader policy debates.
“New York Congressman Dan Goldman blasted off, these mass shootings are preventable and therefore are a political issue. Republicans are more committed to cutting taxes for billionaires than taking care of our children. House Democrat whip Katherine Clark posted, we can stop this senseless violence if Republicans choose the safety of our kids over the gun lobby.”
Hughes said that as more information became available about the suspect, the nature of the incident was further clarified. He identified the suspect as Shamir Elkins and described the circumstances of the case.
“Yeah. Then they got real quiet when this photo dropped. This is Shamir Elkins. He was identified as the man who walked into at least three houses and gunned down pretty much everyone in them, including those eight children, seven of whom were his own.”
Hughes said the details indicated the case involved domestic violence rather than a random attack.
“See, it turns out, this wasn’t just some random mass shooting that the left can use as a billboard for gun grabbing. This was a domestic violence incident.”
He continued by describing the sequence of events attributed to the suspect, including the movement between multiple homes and the subsequent police pursuit.
“but see a black man killing his own children that he’d had with multiple women in a crazy rampage before jacking a car and leading the cops on a chase and getting shot himself. That doesn’t exactly fit the narrative.”
Hughes argued that the circumstances of the case differ from broader discussions about gun policy.
“The truth is that a lunatic systematically walked from house to house, killing his own kids, and it makes zero sense to claim that disarming law abiding gun owners would have made a lick of difference.”
He concluded by commenting on how he views the broader political response to incidents like the one in Shreveport.
“Then again, it’s never been about facts. For Democrats, it’s about power and whatever agenda they need to push to seize it.”
