The Colleton County coroner confirmed the ruling and noted that Carter was wearing a seatbelt at the time, according to reports from TMZ and Page Six.
Carter gained national recognition during Season 24 of “The Voice,” where he delivered a standout audition performance that drew attention from both viewers and the show’s panel of coaches. During his audition, he performed “I Look to You” by Whitney Houston and dedicated the song to his late mother.
The performance prompted all four judges—Gwen Stefani, John Legend, Reba McEntire, and Niall Horan—to turn their chairs in an effort to recruit him to their respective teams.
Carter ultimately selected McEntire as his coach but was later eliminated during the competition’s Battle Rounds.
His family confirmed his death in a statement released Sunday, describing the loss as significant for both relatives and the local community.
“As a gifted singer, he frequently entertained our community with his performances at Town events,” the statement read in part. “His kindness and charm earned him immense respect, and his absence will be deeply felt.”
The statement also included a message directed toward those affected by Carter’s passing.
“To the loved ones and acquaintances of Dylan, we offer our sincerest condolences during this difficult period,” it continued. “The Town of Moncks Corner, its Council, and entire staff extend their deepest sympathies.”
The family concluded with a personal reflection.
“He was much more to our family than an entertainer he was our friend and we are deeply saddened.”
Carter’s death has prompted an outpouring of responses from members of his local community and fans who followed his appearance on the televised singing competition.
