Chelsea Handler Spills the Tea On ‘Cheap’ Celebrity Chef After Awkward Date

Chelsea Handler opened up about an awkward celebrity encounter that never quite sizzled, as reported [1] by Page Six.

During Kristin Cavallari’s “Let’s Be Honest” podcast, Handler, 51, revealed a “bad” dating experience she had with celebrity chef Bobby Flay.

Asked to share a celebrity date story she had not told before, Handler wasted no time naming Flay, describing how they were set up by a mutual friend.

She explained that after they started chatting on the phone and flirting, Flay offered to order her room service while she was staying at a hotel with friends.

“I was at a hotel with some girlfriends,” the comedian said, noting that Flay told her he knew the hotel well. “He wanted to order … food for us. He was like, ‘Let me order your food for you. I love that hotel.’”

The plan took an unexpected turn when the hotel staff later brought the comedian a bill for the meal.

“And I’m like, ‘What?’” Handler recalled. “And then somebody was like, ‘Oh yeah. He’s really cheap.’ And I was like, ‘Oh, I hate cheap.’”

Handler continued, “If you’re penurious, I’m not interested in you. I’m generous, and I like people to be generous with their money.”

Despite that moment, the two eventually met for a date, but the comedian admitted it simply did not work out.

“It was not a match,” she said, offering little more than, “It was just like, messy.”

Page Six reached out to Flay’s representative for comment but did not receive an immediate response.

Flay, 61, has also had his own lighthearted exchange with Cavallari in the past on the same podcast.

Back in November 2024, he recalled how Cavallari once turned him down when he tried to set up dinner during a trip to Nashville.

“I DMed you, and I said to you … ‘I’m going to be in Nashville for one night. Can I take you to dinner?’” he said at the time.

Flay added that Cavallari responded by saying she was “already dating somebody,” though she later clarified that she was simply “burnt out” with dating.

Flay laughed while insisting, “No, you said, ‘I’ve already started seeing somebody!’ And I said, ‘I just want to go to dinner with you,’” emphasizing that he only wanted to meet as friends.

The cookbook author is now in a relationship with fellow chef Brooke Williamson.

Handler’s candid recollection, full of her trademark blunt humor, made for the kind of celebrity anecdote that fans have come to expect — funny, a little cringeworthy, and very much on brand.
