Rescuers Pull Venezuelan Security Guard Alive After Eight Harrowing Days Trapped Beneath Rubble [WATCH]

A story of impossible survival has emerged [1] from the ruins of Venezuela’s worst earthquake disaster in decades.

After eight punishing days trapped beneath the collapsed Galerías Playa Grande shopping center in La Guaira, a 43 year old security guard named Hernán Alberto Gil Flores was pulled out alive, astonishing rescuers and sparking a wave of emotion across the devastated region.

The rescue follows the deadly twin earthquakes that struck northern Venezuela on June 24, leaving more than 2,200 people dead and tens of thousands of buildings reduced to rubble.

Gil Flores’ survival is one of the few bright points in a tragedy that has obliterated entire communities and further strained a nation already teetering from years of socialist mismanagement.

According to emergency officials, Gil Flores had been on overnight duty when the first quake hit, leveling the building around him.

Miraculously, his small security booth stayed intact, creating a fragile pocket of safety that kept him alive longer than anyone dreamed possible.

Rescuers said the search continued through relentless aftershocks, torrential rain and frighteningly unstable debris.

“When we found him, he asked us not to tell his wife that he was alive, just in case he would not make it,” said Costa Rican Red Cross rescuer Minyar Collado.

The gravity of that statement shows just how fragile the operation truly was.

Over the weekend, rescue crews detected faint signs of life beneath the wreckage.

Using a telescopic camera, they confirmed a human presence and began carefully drilling a small tunnel.

Water and nutrient liquids were lowered down through a tube to keep the trapped man alive as rescuers continued the painstaking dig.

When they finally reached him on Thursday, Gil Flores could barely speak.

His wife, Gusbimar González, said her despair had turned to hope when rescuers contacted her.

“When I learned he was alive, I saw a ray of light in the darkness,” she told reporters, describing the emotional swing from grief to disbelief.

The couple has two children, ages 8 and 10, who had waited for days praying their father would somehow come home.

Crowds gathered outside the site as video captured the dramatic rescue. Gil Flores emerged on a stretcher covered with an orange tarp, surrounded by rescuers and cheers.

Members of the Costa Rican Red Cross embraced each other, their faces showing exhaustion and relief.

The rescue was part of an international effort led by Chilean firefighters, with teams from the United States, Mexico, Portugal and other countries assisting on site.

In a rare moment of cooperation, even nations with strained ties to Caracas set politics aside to save lives.

American crews brought in heavy lifting equipment and specialized listening devices that helped identify survivors within the vast field of destruction.

It is worth noting that the United States has been one of the few nations providing substantial aid amid the chaos.

In separate rescues earlier this week, a two year old boy was pulled alive after six days in the rubble, and a nine month old baby girl was saved along with her mother by American teams.

Those moments added small but powerful sparks of joy to a country overwhelmed by sadness.

Each survivor’s story has reminded weary Venezuelans that even in the worst moments, human courage can overcome neglect and incompetence.

The earthquakes measured magnitudes 7.2 and 7.5 and flattened much of Catia La Mar and nearby coastal cities.

Over eleven thousand people were injured, and hundreds more remain missing.

Analysts have pointed out that Venezuela’s infrastructure, neglected through years of corruption and economic collapse, likely worsened the toll.

Despite the grim statistics, Gil Flores’ survival has become a rallying symbol of perseverance.

It has given thousands of Venezuelans a reason to cheer in a time when faith in their government has long been lost.

For now, the people who watched Gil Flores carried out alive have found a glimmer of hope amid devastation.

And that, in itself, is a miracle Venezuela desperately needed.
