An Ohio wedding intended to celebrate a new marriage descended [1] into absolute bedlam after unwanted guests allegedly attacked a reveler and ignited a brawl between two families with a history of hostility.
The romantic evening quickly became a reception nobody will forget, for all the wrong reasons.
The violence erupted around 8:50 p.m. Friday at the La Centre Banquet Facility in Westlake, about 14 miles west of Cleveland.
Music, dancing, and wedding cheer gave way to screaming guests, flying furniture, and a frantic rush toward the exits.
“We were dancing, and four brothers jumped on us,” an alleged victim told police, according to video obtained by Fox 8 Cleveland and KHOU.
That account offered a blunt summary of how rapidly the celebration went from festive to feral.
Police identified one of the men as 46-year-old Raed Mahmoud Sulaiman.
Investigators said Sulaiman grabbed a butter knife from a place setting and began threatening people, turning an ordinary dinner utensil into the centerpiece of a banquet hall panic.
Video released by police reportedly showed Sulaiman charging toward guests while music continued blaring inside the crowded venue.
Apparently, even the butter knives needed security at this reception, where old grudges proved stronger than wedding etiquette.
“We knew violence already happened from independent witnesses who called us, who said people were bloody, so we know there’s already violence going on,” Westlake Police Captain Jerry Vogel said, according to the outlet.
Officers arrived knowing they were not walking into a minor disagreement over seating arrangements.
As the confrontation intensified, one attendee grabbed a chair and hurled it toward the armed suspect.
Other guests chose the more sensible option and headed for the doors, leaving behind the dance floor as the family feud swallowed the entire room.

At least 40 frantic people poured into the parking lot, where arriving officers attempted to determine who had attacked whom.
One alleged victim, still adjusting his pants after the confrontation, pointed police toward the men he said were responsible.
Authorities later said the disruption involved two families already known for hostility toward each other.
Their unresolved grievances apparently followed them into the wedding, proving that fancy clothes and floral centerpieces cannot conceal bad blood for long.
Police did not immediately clarify whether the feuding groups were related or whether the dispute crossed family lines in a tragic romance style conflict.
What was clear, according to investigators, was that placing the groups together caused old resentments to roar back to life.
“People who don’t normally get together and have hostilities against each other got together for whatever reason,” Vogel said.
“In this case, it was somebody’s wedding. I don’t know all the relationships that were involved but when they got together, everything came back to the surface.”
Sulaiman was arrested and charged with assault, inducing panic, and tampering with evidence.
Police said he discarded the butter knife before officers arrived, an alleged attempt to make the most ridiculous weapon in the room conveniently disappear.
“He took it one step further and brandished an actual butter knife from a place setting evidently and was threatening people with the butter knife,” Vogel said.
The utensil may have been designed for dinner rolls, but investigators say it helped spread fear instead of butter.
Two other men, described by officials as “bad apples,” were charged for their alleged roles in the chaos.
Ali Wahdan, 47, faces an accusation that he violated a court order protecting family members who were attending the wedding.
Abdallah Wahdan, 48, is accused of threatening several guests and was charged with aggravated menacing.
Police closed with a warning for anyone tempted to drag a personal feud into another couple’s big day.
“Don’t spoil someone else’s wedding,” said Vogel.
“Now those people are unfortunately are always going to be remembered as the wedding where there was a melee and fights involved. They’re not going to remember the good parts of it. They’re going to remember the bad parts.”
