A perjury accusation aimed at former Special Counsel Jack Smith fell apart in dramatic fashion during a fiery congressional hearing Tuesday, producing a viral reaction from Sen. Katie Britt.
The Alabama Republican happened to be sitting beside the colleague whose accusation rapidly unraveled, as reported [1] by The New York Post.
Sen. Eric Schmitt (R-Mo.) suggested Smith had lied when he said he did not coordinate his case against President Trump with Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis.
Schmitt based the charge on text messages that appeared, at first glance, to place Smith in Atlanta.
The messages seemingly indicated that Smith was “in Atlanta” and attending a “Hawks game” in February of 2024.
From that wording, Schmitt pressed a theory that Smith had been near Willis while denying coordination with her.
The theory did not survive Smith’s response.
Smith explained that he had actually attended a women’s college basketball game between the Maryland Terrapins and Iowa Hawkeyes, who are occasionally known as the “Hawks.”
That game, according to Smith’s explanation at the hearing, did not put him anywhere near Willis in Atlanta.
The apparent geographic smoking gun had instead pointed to an entirely different sporting event.
As the accusation collapsed, a hearing room camera focused on Britt, who was seated next to Schmitt.
Her eyes widened, and her stunned expression supplied social media with a reaction shot tailor-made for instant circulation.
