Adam Carolla argued that race, ethnicity, and gender should not be treated as personal achievements, saying people should instead be judged by what they create, accomplish and contribute.
Carolla’s comments centered on the idea that characteristics assigned at birth are not the result of individual effort and therefore should not be the primary basis for pride or public identity.
“There’s a lot of things you can hang your hat on, but you being black, or you being Middle Eastern, or you being a dude, or you being a woman is zero accomplishment. It has nothing to do with you. So shut the f**k up.”
He said people should spend less time emphasizing identity and more time pursuing measurable achievements.
“Just shut up about it. Just fucking go out and win something, and do something, and make something, and create something, and stop fucking talking about your skin color. Who gives a f**k?”
Carolla argued that public discussion has become overly focused on race and gender, saying those characteristics are frequently treated as defining credentials rather than circumstances of birth.
“That’s all they do.”
He specifically singled out Sonny Hostin, criticizing how often she references being a woman and a person of color.
“Sunny Hostin. I would like to create a ticker like the amount of, like, the national debt ticker they’ll have up, or the amount of people killed by cigarette smoke, of the time Sunny Hostin has said, as a woman, as a woman of color, shut up, b*tch. You have nothing to do with any of that.”
Carolla’s broader point was that ancestry, race, and sex do not represent accomplishments by the individual who possesses them. He argued that those traits should not be presented as if they reflect personal effort or merit.
“Well, why don’t we just, you know, had something to do with that? Your ancestors, your great-grandfather, your grandfather, who owned slaves, them. Why don’t we talk to them about their ancestry?”
He then broadened the argument beyond any one racial or ethnic group, saying people in general should stop treating where they come from as something they personally achieved.
“Just shut up, everybody. No one gives a f**k where you’re from. No one gives a f**k where you come from.”
Carolla also applied the same reasoning to biological sex, arguing that being male or female is a matter of chance rather than achievement.
“And you having a vagina versus a penis is f**king luck of the draw, cosmically luck of the draw. No one gives a f**k. You did nothing.”
