Authorities said 11 of the 12 injured people suffered gunshot wounds. One victim was listed in critical condition, two others were seriously injured, and eight were in stable condition following the shooting, according to police.
Tallahassee Police Chief Lawrence E. Revell said during a news conference that six of the known victims were adults and six were juveniles. Revell also confirmed that the youngest victim was 11 years old.
The chief offered condolences to those caught in the violence and their loved ones. “Tonight, our thoughts are with the victims and their families as they face the devastating impact of this violence,” Revell said.
“It is especially heartbreaking to know that children are among those injured,” he continued. “In the moments immediately following the shooting, and before the scene was fully secure, our officers put their own safety at risk to carry victims to safety and transport them to the hospital. Their actions were nothing short of heroic and reflect the courage and compassion our officers bring to this community every day.”
Police said preliminary information indicated that a physical altercation occurred before the shooting. Authorities characterized that confrontation as an isolated incident involving two or three individuals, though the investigation remained active.
No arrests had been announced as of the latest update from police. Detectives with the Tallahassee Police Department’s Violent Crimes Unit were working to identify those responsible for the shooting.
The violence occurred during Florida A&M University’s Homecoming Week, when students and alumni had gathered in Tallahassee for annual celebrations. The timing placed the shooting near a major university event as authorities rushed to secure the area and aid victims.
Florida A&M University said the incident happened near campus, while emphasizing that the campus itself remained safe. University officials encouraged people to stay away from the area so law enforcement officers could continue their investigation without interference.
“Our hearts go out to the victims and all those affected by this tragic incident,” the university said. “While the campus remains safe, individuals are encouraged to avoid the area to allow law enforcement to conduct its investigation.”
