Jake Tapper’s Eye Rolls Explode Online During Ilhan Omar Probe Analysis [WATCH]

CNN anchor Jake Tapper went viral Wednesday after his facial expressions became the story during a discussion about the investigation into Minnesota Congresswoman Ilhan Omar. The 57-year-old anchor appeared [1] frustrated and skeptical as senior legal analyst Elie Honig examined the reported case.

The exchange unfolded during a segment on The Lead. Honig began by discussing a search warrant issued by a judge outside the Justice Department this week, saying the warrant indicated that the judge believed there was sufficient probable cause that “a crime was committed.”

The investigation reportedly centers on whether Omar, a 44-year-old Democrat, changed her birthdate in 2000. The alleged change was reportedly used to claim a benefit that allowed her to become a citizen while still a minor.

Tapper immediately focused on the age of the allegation. “That seems like a long time ago,” he said before raising his eyebrows and asking how “important” the case could be when the alleged conduct occurred “26 years ago.”

Honig responded by explaining why the passage of time might not automatically put the matter beyond prosecutors’ reach. “Some offenses say that if a person gets into the country or gets status by making false statements and then remains in the country… the person remaining in the country will extend the statute of limitations.”

Tapper sat silently and without expression while Honig continued. The analyst said the five-year statute of limitations that applies to most federal immigration crimes did not appear to control the reported circumstances surrounding this investigation.

That analysis complicated a CNN report published Wednesday that Tapper helped write. Honig also challenged claims that the investigation was simply political, giving the visibly unimpressed anchor even more to digest on live television.

Clips of the exchange spread Thursday rapidly after several conservative influencers shared them. The videos accumulated hundreds of thousands of views as Tapper’s raised eyebrows, eye rolls, silence and curt responses drew nearly as much attention as Honig’s legal analysis.

Honig, 51, said parts of the investigation began in 2018 under Joe Biden. He also said any evidence of “obstruction” that may have occurred during the last five years could still be prosecuted.

The analyst added that newly filed paperwork could have renewed investigators’ interest. Honig suggested that “perhaps a reapplication or a renewal” involving citizenship for “somebody relating to” or “around” Omar could have triggered investigative activity.

Tapper rolled his eyes and appeared annoyed by the explanation. He then shook his head and pressed Honig on whether Omar could have handled the matter differently before President Donald Trump’s Justice Department became involved.

“Just… quickly,” Tapper said. “Would it not have been wiser for the congresswoman to have gone to the Biden Justice Department and said this has happened and there was a mistake and I’d like to come clean and pay whatever fine?”

“And then that way this, you know, [is] not left up to the Trump Justice Department?” Tapper added. His question shifted the discussion toward whether Omar might have received different treatment during the Biden administration.

Honig acknowledged that Omar “might have fared better under the Biden administration.” He then pointed to reports that Homeland Security Investigations officials had been alerted to the potential fraud during the Biden administration.

According to the Wall Street Journal, the agency initially declined to move forward because it lacked evidence. Honig said that history could weaken any future claim from Omar that the current investigation was politically selective or vindictive.

“So, I think that’s going to undermine any argument she may have down the line that this is politically selective and vindictive,” Honig said. He nevertheless added that Trump had provided Omar with material she could use to argue that she was being personally targeted.

Honig concluded: “Then again, Donald Trump has given [Rep. Omar] plenty of ammo to argue that she’s being singled out for personal reasons.” Tapper responded with a curt “thanks so much” before sending the program to a commercial break.

Homeland Security officers raided Omar’s Washington residence Monday. Omar, a US citizen originally from Somalia, has publicly described the search as part of a political attack by the administration.

The congresswoman is seeking reelection in Minnesota, where midterm voting has already started. Meanwhile, Tapper’s on-camera reactions ensured that a segment about legal timelines, citizenship paperwork, and probable cause became an online spectacle of its own.
