Loudoun County Public Schools has declared October 2026 “LGBTQ+ History Month” and is encouraging staff, students and members of the community to recognize and celebrate the designation throughout the school year.
The Virginia school district announced [1] the decision in a proclamation stating that it wants schools to honor the history and contributions of the LGBTQ+ community.
Officials wrote that the district “recognizes October 2026 as LGBTQ+ History Month in Loudoun County Public Schools, and encourages staff, students and the community to honor and celebrate the rich history and contributions of the LGBTQ+ community to the Commonwealth of Virginia, our beautifully diverse county, and our schools during LGBTQ+ History Month and throughout the school year.”
The proclamation quickly drew criticism online from people who argued that public schools should not promote contested views involving gender and sexuality.
One user on X shared the LCPS proclamation and accused the district of promoting an ideology that many families in Loudoun County reject.
“Loudoun County Public Schools just declared October ‘LGBTQ+ History Month’ and told staff and students to celebrate radical gender ideology. Thousands of Loudoun families reject that ideology and their beliefs are not bigotry, they are grounded in biology, faith, and common sense.”
The same user argued that the district should focus on academic subjects and leave questions involving gender beliefs to families.
“A public school district has no business endorsing contested gender claims as official policy. Teach reading, math, and real history. Leave the rest to parents,” she added.

Another user responded to the proclamation by calling for stronger parental action against the district’s policies.
“There has to be some sort of revolt by parents. I’m sure there are plenty of counties in Virginia that aren’t too far from Loudoun that don’t share this nonsensical ideology. Either that, or start homeschooling your kids folks.”

The declaration comes as Loudoun County Public Schools continues to face criticism over its handling of LGBTQ+ policies and related controversies.
Earlier this year, the school district was placed under investigation following allegations involving a transgender student at Freedom High School in South Riding, Virginia.
The student was accused of recording more than 40 boys from beneath bathroom stalls at the school.
According to 7News, school officials kept the incidents from the public while the matter was unfolding.
The controversy added to longstanding disputes in Loudoun County over school policies involving transgender students, bathroom access and the role of parents in decisions involving gender identity.
The district also came into conflict with guidance issued during the administration of former Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin.
Under Youngkin’s administration, guidance stated that transgender students should not use bathrooms designated for the opposite sex. Loudoun County Public Schools refused to follow that guidance.
Those disputes have kept the Northern Virginia school system at the center of broader debates over how public schools should address gender identity, sexuality and parental authority.
The latest proclamation extends that debate into the classroom by encouraging students and staff to recognize LGBTQ+ History Month not only during October but throughout the school year.
Supporters of the proclamation describe the designation as recognition of the history and contributions of the LGBTQ+ community in Virginia, Loudoun County and the school system.
Critics, however, argue that the district is moving beyond teaching and into the promotion of disputed social and political beliefs.
The online responses to the proclamation also show that some parents and community members are considering alternatives, including moving to nearby counties or homeschooling their children.
The dispute is likely to add another chapter to the ongoing conflict surrounding Loudoun County Public Schools, which has repeatedly found itself at the center of national debates over education, transgender policies and parental involvement.
For now, LCPS has formally designated October 2026 as LGBTQ+ History Month and is encouraging participation by staff, students and the broader community throughout the school year.
