Miley Cyrus has landed in Billboard chart history for a result far removed from the celebration that greeted her latest release. Her new album, “Bass Persuades,” crashed from No. 1 to No. 157 on the Billboard 200 in its second week, as reported [1] y Page Six.
That tumble is the biggest fall from the top spot by a female artist in the chart’s history. It also places the record among the steepest second-week drops ever for an album that debuted at No. 1.
“Bass Persuades” initially exceeded expectations by opening at No. 1 on Sept. 28. According to Billboard, the album sold roughly 61,000 total album units through a combination of physical purchases and streaming.
The previous record among female artists belonged to Madonna’s “Madame X,” which dropped from No. 1 to No. 77 in 2019. Celine Dion surpassed that result a few months later when “Courage” tumbled from No. 1 to No. 111.
The release marks Cyrus’ first album through Atlantic Records after she departed Columbia Records earlier this year. Atlantic offered the digital album at a discounted price while releasing 16 vinyl variants, nine CD versions, six download variants and a cassette.
Those options helped “Bass Persuades” narrowly defeat country singer Ella Langley’s “Dandelion” in the chart race. Cyrus’ album finished ahead by roughly 70 units.
Ahead of the album’s arrival, Cyrus mysteriously removed her last name from her social media handles. After the record reached the summit, Atlantic sent a floral wreath shaped like a No. 1 to her home.
“Bass Persuades being #1 transcends a win,” Cyrus wrote on Instagram while celebrating the achievement. She then reflected on the experience of making and releasing the record with her collaborators.
“This process has been some of the best times for me. Everyone involved made it possible and, more importantly, fun and memorable,” she continued.
“Thank you Atlantic, my team, and everyone who walks beside me with conviction. I love you. To the fans, you make my world go round. Making music for you brings immeasurable joy to my life. Forever.”
Taylor Swift has since returned to No. 1 with “The Life of a Showgirl.” The release of the album’s deluxe “Encore” edition helped Swift reclaim the leading position.
Cyrus’ previous album, 2025’s “Something Beautiful,” debuted at No. 4 after selling about 44,000 total album units. Despite its dramatic second-week plunge, “Bass Persuades” became her first No. 1 album since 2013’s “Bangerz.”
Bon Jovi continues to hold the overall record for the largest second-week fall by an album that entered at No. 1. “This House Is Not for Sale” dropped from No. 1 to No. 169 in 2018.
Cyrus has not undertaken a full tour since her 2014 “Bangerz” world tour, although she has teased the possibility of a residency. She is scheduled to perform two shows at the Hollywood Bowl on Oct. 16 and Oct. 18.
Nearly 1.5 million fans entered the online presale queue for an opportunity to purchase one of roughly 18,000 tickets, according to the Hollywood Reporter. The intense demand followed Cyrus’ decision to stage the shows at the Hollywood Bowl.
“I chose to do the show at the Bowl because I knew that my bed was only going to be like a 10-minute drive home by 11,” Cyrus told Apple Music’s Zane Lowe last month.
She later declared, “I’ve learned now through the queue that my calculations are correct, and people will come to me. I don’t need to drive to you. Proven. That was a test. I win.”
