Ms. Rachel Sparks Backlash After Backing Macklemore and Embracing Political Activism

Ms. Rachel built her enormous audience with gentle songs, colorful visuals and a soothing approach to preschool entertainment. Known for Songs for Littles, she became a fan favorite among families, but her increasingly public political activism is now drawing criticism from commentators who question how that advocacy fits with her influence over young children.

The dispute intensified after Ms. Rachel announced that she would match a $1 million donation from rapper Macklemore in support of Palestinian causes. According to Fox News, Macklemore planned to donate $1 million earned from a recent tour to organizations assisting Palestinians.

Ms. Rachel offered to match donations benefiting the Palestine Children’s Relief Fund, where she serves as an ambassador. The announcement placed her political and humanitarian advocacy before the same broad public that knows her primarily through children’s programming.

Her support for Palestinian causes is not her first public statement about a prominent social issue. Ms. Rachel has also spoken about immigration detention, LGBTQ+ rights and other social matters while continuing to create videos for children.

According to Fox News, she traveled to Washington, D.C., in June to advocate for ending the detention of immigrant children. She later visited an immigration detention facility in New Jersey.

Tina Descovich, cofounder of Moms for Liberty, pushed back against Ms. Rachel’s public comments. Descovich warned that parents who trust the entertainer with preschool education should expect political messaging to accompany the children’s content.

Speaking to Fox News Digital, Descovich said, “She’s using her leadership role for political activism.” Her criticism centered on the reach Ms. Rachel commands and the trust parents place in her when selecting programming for toddlers.

Descovich also said, “She seems to think she can divide her personal views from her influence over toddlers, but parents are tuning in to her messaging because they trust her with their toddlers.”

The Moms for Liberty cofounder went further with a proposed warning for viewers. “I think her shows should all start with a warning label that says, ‘Warning, this woman has been nominated to be the antisemite of the year in the United States,’ and they should know that before they put her in front of their toddlers.”

Descovich argued that parents expect Ms. Rachel to focus on kindness, citizenship and preparation for school. She objected to political and social messages that she believes families do not anticipate when choosing programming for very young children.

“Parents turn to her to teach their children potentially to be kind and be a good citizen and love your neighbor,” Descovich said. “It would be great if she would teach kids the beginnings of learning to read and concepts so that they can be ready for kindergarten, but infiltrating gender ideology with children as young as two and three and four, that’s not something parents are expecting or want to put in front of their kids at such a young age.”

Ms. Rachel, however, has defended her willingness to discuss political and humanitarian concerns publicly. According to Fox News, she described herself as having a “really good moral compass” while discussing her decision to take political positions.

Bethany Mandel, a Washington Examiner contributor, author and homeschooling mother of six, also criticized Ms. Rachel during comments to Fox News. Mandel argued that some creators do not view their positions as political because they consider their conclusions unquestionably correct.

“This is the case for a lot of liberals. They don’t see it as a political perspective at all. They just see the world in black and white and what they are doing is so clearly correct.”

Mandel argued that this outlook can develop among creators who rarely engage with people holding opposing beliefs. She also contended that the war in Gaza can lead people to embrace a single narrative and promote disputed figures, including numbers supplied by agencies run by Hamas.

“It’s important to understand that she only cares about one narrative. She only cares about this very false narrative where what’s happening in Gaza is a genocide, falsely categorizing it as such.”

Mandel added, “She amplifies numbers that are not real, the numbers of deceased children, the numbers of people who have died in general; she’s accepting a Hamas narrative on every single thing and amplifying it.”

Ms. Rachel’s videos remain children’s programming, even as her political profile becomes more visible to parents and critics. She has made clear that she intends to use her large platform to speak about issues she considers important, despite the mounting objections to mixing that advocacy with her public identity as a preschool entertainer.
