Robert De Niro abruptly left Edge of Darkness after barely a week of filming, disrupting a project intended to return Mel Gibson to a Hollywood leading role. The sudden departure ended a potentially formidable screen pairing and left unanswered questions about why the two stars stopped working together.
Production began in Massachusetts in 2008, with Martin Campbell directing the thriller. Gibson, then returning to a starring role after several years away from the screen, played homicide detective Thomas Craven.
De Niro had been cast opposite Gibson as a shadowy operative. His exit forced Campbell to replace him with Ray Winstone before the completed film reached cinemas in 2010.
De Niro’s spokesperson offered only a brief explanation when addressing the departure. The spokesperson told Variety at the time: “Sometimes things don’t work out. It’s called creative differences.”
No more detailed public account came from De Niro, Gibson or Campbell. That silence allowed speculation to surround a departure that happened almost immediately after filming began.
Rumours subsequently suggested that De Niro objected to working with Gibson because of antisemitic comments Gibson made during his 2006 arrest for drinking and driving. However, no evidence established that explanation, and creative differences remained the official reason for the split.
The departure carried additional weight because of the project’s pedigree. Edge of Darkness originated as an acclaimed six episode BBC television drama directed by Campbell and written by Troy Kennedy Martin.
Gibson had been fascinated by the original production since seeing it during the 1980s. Speaking to Female.com.au in 2010, he said: “I watched the original miniseries in the ’80s, and I really liked it. It was one of those things that I would stop and watch. I didn’t do that with many things, but I watched that, because I found it really, fascinating.”

The television version starred Bob Peck, who died aged 53, as widowed Yorkshire police officer Ronald Craven. His investigation into his daughter’s murder draws him into a conspiracy involving the nuclear industry, government and intelligence services.
Joe Don Baker, who died aged 89, portrayed CIA operative Darius Jedburgh in the BBC drama. De Niro was initially recruited to play the corresponding role in the Hollywood adaptation before his rapid exit opened the way for Winstone.
Campbell had become one of Hollywood’s leading action directors following the television series. His credits included GoldenEye with Pierce Brosnan, The Mask of Zorro with Antonio Banderas and Casino Royale with Daniel Craig.
For the film adaptation, the story moved to Boston, where Gibson’s Thomas Craven investigates the murder of his daughter Emma. Winstone took over as Jedburgh, while Danny Huston and Bojana Novakovic also joined the cast.
Campbell later discussed the challenge of turning the expansive television drama into a theatrical feature. He said: “The main problem was how do you knock six hours down to two? Six hours was a luxury.”
The finished film removed much of the political complexity that had distinguished the television production. Instead, it concentrated more heavily on the grieving father’s relationship with his murdered daughter and his pursuit of those responsible for her death.
The project emerged during a turbulent stretch in Gibson’s career. Despite earlier starring roles in Mad Max, Lethal Weapon and Braveheart, he had not led a film since M Night Shyamalan’s Signs in 2002.

Gibson had also established himself as a successful director, winning best director and best picture Oscars for Braveheart. His other directing projects included The Passion of the Christ, Apocalypto, Hacksaw Ridge and Flight Risk.
He has since returned to the world of The Passion of the Christ with The Resurrection of the Christ, an ambitious sequel structured in two parts. Production filmed in locations including Rome, Bari, Ginosa, Craco, Brindisi and Matera and is now in postproduction.
De Niro, meanwhile, remains one of the most decorated actors of his generation following performances in The Godfather Part II, Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, Goodfellas, Casino and The Irishman. He is also preparing to return as former CIA operative Jack Byrnes in Focker-in-Law.
The latest Meet the Parents instalment also features Ben Stiller, Ariana Grande, Owen Wilson, Blythe Danner and Teri Polo. Yet the brief De Niro and Gibson collaboration remains defined by its abrupt ending and the limited official explanation that followed.
