Local police are investigating the overnight shooting death of West Virginia football commit Chris Wilson Jr. in Muncie, Indiana. Wilson was 17 and attended Yorktown High School.
Muncie Police Department emergency dispatchers received a report of shots fired at 2:59 a.m. Monday, according to authorities. Police found Wilson inside a vehicle after responding to the report.
Wilson had suffered multiple gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene. The investigation into his death remains ongoing.
The Star Press first reported Wilson’s death. News of the shooting brought statements from both the West Virginia football program and Yorktown High School.
“The West Virginia Football program is heartbroken by the news of the tragic loss of Chris Wilson Jr. this morning,” Mountaineers coach Rich Rodriguez said in a statement. Rodriguez had gotten to know Wilson through West Virginia’s recruiting process.
“We really enjoyed getting to know Chris during the recruiting process. The WVU football program sends it[s] heartfelt thoughts and prayers to Chris’ family in this difficult time.”
Wilson had developed into a standout defensive end and a three-star prospect in the 2027 class at Yorktown High School in Indiana. He was a 6-foot-4, 235-pound defender.
During his junior season in 2025, Wilson recorded 25 tackles, four sacks and an interception. He also helped lead Yorktown to a Class 4A sectional title.
Wilson returned for his senior year this fall and was credited with 12 tackles and a sack through five games. His athletic involvement at Yorktown extended beyond the football field.
Wilson also competed as a discus thrower on Yorktown’s track and field team. His football production and recruiting profile had attracted interest from numerous college programs.
According to ESPN rankings, Wilson was the No. 11 overall recruit from the state of Indiana in the 2027 class. He was also the fourth ranked player among the 24 prospects committed to West Virginia’s 2027 class when he began his senior year this fall.
Wilson held scholarship offers from more than a dozen Division I football programs. He committed to West Virginia in June after taking an official visit with the Mountaineers.
West Virginia secured Wilson’s commitment over Auburn, Cincinnati and Purdue. His pledge placed him among a 2027 Mountaineers class that had 24 committed prospects at the beginning of his senior year.
Yorktown High School principal Stacey Brewer acknowledged Wilson’s death in a message sent to parents and students Monday morning. Brewer wrote that Wilson’s family had given the school permission to share the news.
“With great sadness, I share that Chris Wilson, a senior at Yorktown High School, died tragically early this morning,” Brewer wrote. “His family has given us permission to share this news.”
“Chris was a valued member of our school, our football team, and our community. Our hearts are with his family, friends, and teammates.”
The messages from Rodriguez and Brewer reflected Wilson’s connections to the college program he had chosen and the high school community where he played football and competed in track and field. Both statements extended support to Wilson’s family and those close to him.
Wilson’s final reported football statistics this fall were 12 tackles and a sack through five games. Those numbers followed his 25 tackles, four sacks and an interception during Yorktown’s Class 4A sectional title season in 2025.
The Mountaineers entered the week with a 3-2 record. West Virginia hosts Arizona on Saturday at noon ET, with the game scheduled to air on TNT.
