Marco Rubio Torches Wild Exit Rumors With One Perfect Answer [WATCH]

Speculation erupted Thursday over reports claiming Secretary of State Marco Rubio was considering leaving the Trump administration and preparing for a possible presidential campaign in 2028. The chatter quickly gathered steam, but the administration wasted little time rejecting [1] it.

White House spokesperson Beni Rae Harmony blasted the story and the anonymous sourcing behind it. Her statement portrayed Rubio as firmly committed to President Donald Trump and the broader MAGA movement.

“This fake news is nothing more than a fabricated hoax being peddled by anonymous sources with no factual information,” Harmony said in a statement. “Secretary Rubio is a fearless fighter for President Trump and the MAGA movement.”

The Independent reported that GOP sources and UK government figures viewed Rubio as the leading candidate to succeed Trump. Those sources also expected Rubio to resign in an effort to “distance himself from the Iran war.”

Administration officials offered a much different picture, turning the supposed political bombshell into another fight over anonymous reporting. Assistant Secretary of State for Global Public Affairs Dylan Johnson dismissed the report in unusually blunt terms.

Johnson called it “completely baseless fake news from made-up anonymous ‘sources.’” He also suggested the publication would eventually have reason to regret running with the claims.

“We look forward to revisiting this ‘report’ in the coming weeks to celebrate yet another humiliating own goal by The Independent,” Johnson added.

Rubio then personally knocked down the speculation rather than leaving the response entirely to White House and State Department officials. He said remaining with Trump for the duration has “always been my plan.”

“I don’t know where these things come from, to be honest with you,” Rubio said of the reports. His answer directly challenged the central claim that he was preparing to head for the exits.

Rubio also made clear that he remains pleased with his current work. Then he delivered the line that turned the latest round of speculation into material for another joke.

“I love the work I’m doing,” Rubio said. “And plus I always laugh when they say he’s going to leave his job. I go, ‘Which one?’”

The remark played off the running joke about Rubio taking on the responsibilities of other officials who leave, in addition to his actual duties. Rubio currently serves as Secretary of State and National Security Adviser.

The internet has produced numerous memes showing Rubio sitting on a couch while occupying a collection of different jobs. His response leaned into that image while skewering the report that he was supposedly preparing to surrender his administration roles.

The answer was classic Rubio, using a joke to puncture a story his colleagues had already labeled fake news. Rubio is clearly thriving in the job despite the volume of responsibilities on his plate.

Rubio has also addressed speculation about the 2028 presidential race, particularly where Vice President JD Vance is concerned. He has made clear that he would not run if Vance decides to seek the presidency.

He has also said he has no interest in continuing to discuss that election. “I literally will not talk about 2028 anymore,” Rubio said. “I just won’t do it.”

For now, Rubio has several major matters demanding his attention, including Cuba, a subject he would likely like to resolve if possible. Earlier Thursday, he imposed major sanctions on communist networks.

The administration’s response, Johnson’s mockery, and Rubio’s own remarks all pushed back against the idea that his departure was imminent. Rubio’s sharpest answer required only two words: “Which one?”
