Nicolas Cage is walking back his claim that he was “a little bit homeless” after severe coastal erosion and a sinkhole disrupted life at his $10.5 million Malibu mansion. The actor clarified [1] that he and his family are content and not destitute.
The 62 year old “ConAir” star said his dramatic description came while he was “riffing with a very good interviewer” at Comic Con. His remarks surfaced months after September’s coastal disaster affected his beachfront property.
Nicolas Cage woke up to find Malibu trying to steal his house.
A sinkhole started opening outside his home; Neighbors thought, eh, probably fixable.
Then all hell broke loose.
By yesterday, the driveway had basically rage-quit and collapsed into a 30-by-30-foot crater.
Which, for the guy who played Ghost Rider, is a little too close to the whole “ground opening up to hell” thing.
The collapse also triggered a gas leak, though crews got that secured and thankfully nobody was hurt.
Ocean waves can now reportedly be seen rushing underneath the supports holding up the house, while at least 5 nearby homes have been declared unsafe.
Even by Nicolas Cage standards, this plot is getting ridiculous.

While appearing at the Los Angeles event, Cage was asked about his Halloween plans. He explained that the situation at his Malibu home had complicated the celebration he usually enjoys.
“I’m currently a little bit homeless,” he said, per Page Six. “Something happened to my house in Malibu, so I’m just sort of living in hotels, so I don’t have normal trick-or-treaters I would like to enjoy tonight.”
Cage did have an alternate plan for the holiday. The “Face/Off” actor said he would take his daughter August, 4, trick or treating in nearby Santa Monica.
Afterward, Cage planned to watch Stanley Kubrick’s classic film “The Shining.” His comments connected the unusual Halloween arrangement directly to the problems surrounding his Malibu residence.
The beachfront home was damaged by coastal erosion spurred by September’s Hurricane Marie. The storm formed in the Pacific Ocean and generated massive waves along with high tides.
The driveway in front of Cage’s home collapsed on Tuesday, creating a sinkhole. The property problems left the mansion unavailable for the Halloween traditions Cage had been discussing at Comic Con.
Cage purchased the 4,000 square foot home in 2024 for $10.5 million, according to Realtor.com. The scale and value of the property made his description of himself as “a little bit homeless” especially striking.
The danger extended beyond Cage’s residence. Evacuations were issued for more than 30 homes located on the private road near the west end of the affluent community.
The city said those properties were unsafe because of “the loss of access for Fire and Sheriff’s personnel to respond to medical, fire or law enforcement emergencies.” The warning focused on whether emergency personnel could reach residents along the affected road.
Cage addressed the uproar Wednesday in comments to the Associated Press. He said his earlier words had been taken out of context and explained how the conversation had unfolded.
“I went to Comic Con, and I was riffing with a very good interviewer, and he just had to ask, because it was Halloween night, ‘What are you doing for Halloween?’” he said. “Now, when I said that, I meant my house is not available for trick or treaters.”
The actor emphasized that his family was doing well despite the disruption. He rejected any suggestion that they were facing financial desperation, saying, “We’re not destitute. We’re okay.”
His clarification narrowed the meaning of the homelessness remark to the temporary unavailability of the Malibu house. Cage said he had been talking specifically about decorations, candy, and receiving children at the property.
“I was just meaning that the house is not available for decorations and for candy to hand out to the children, which I like to do because I like Halloween.”
Cage and Riko Shibata married in February 2021. They welcomed their daughter August in September 2022, and Cage’s revised Halloween plan centered on taking her out in Santa Monica while the Malibu home remained unavailable.
