FBI Director Kash Patel said Thursday that federal investigators executed search warrants at multiple locations connected to the suspect accused of ambushing two West Virginia National Guardsmen in Washington, D.C.
Patel provided updates during a press conference as authorities continued reviewing the background and activities of Rahmanullah Lakanwal, the Afghan national identified as the alleged gunman.
National Guardsmen Andrew Wolfe and Sarah Beckstrom were shot at the Farragut West Metro Station on Wednesday.

According to investigators, the weapon used in the attack was a Smith and Wesson revolver. Lakanwal entered the United States in September 2021. Patel said the inquiry now spans several states.
“Partnering with the D.C. United States attorney’s office, we have also executed multiple, multiple search warrants to include the subject’s last known residence, which is in the state of Washington,” Patel said.
“The search warrant was executed on that house last night or early this morning and it’s an ongoing process. All the individuals found in the house have been interviewed and some interviews remain ongoing.”
Patel emphasized that investigators are pursuing every angle.

“We will not stop until we interview anyone and everyone associated with the subject, the house and every piece of his life,” he said.
“There’s also subject interviews, relations conducted in San Diego pursuant to our ongoing investigation. So as the judge noted, this is a coast-to-coast investigation being led right here in Washington D.C.”
Initial witness accounts reported that Lakanwal shouted “Allahu akbar!” before opening fire, according to journalist Julio Rojas.
The report noted that one member of the National Guard who did not have a firearm stabbed the suspect with a pocketknife. Another Guardsman then fired multiple shots that struck Lakanwal.
Patel said the FBI is coordinating with federal agencies to review any information regarding Lakanwal’s ties.
“I spoke to [CIA Director] John Ratcliffe and [Secretary of War] Pete Hegseth. We’re investigating his background to include any known associates that are either overseas or here in the United States of America. That’s what a broad-based international terrorism investigation looks like,” Patel said.
Federal investigators have not released additional details about materials recovered from the searches or any individuals interviewed in connection with the case.
Authorities continue to examine Lakanwal’s movements, contacts, and travel history since entering the United States in 2021.
Interviews are ongoing in multiple jurisdictions as part of the wider investigation.
The shooting at the Farragut West station remains under active review by federal law enforcement, with Patel indicating that additional updates may be provided as investigators complete interviews and analyze evidence collected from the Washington and San Diego search locations.
