Alabama GOP Launches Resolution Calling For Ilhan Omar’s Expulsion From Congress

Alabama Republicans are calling for Minnesota Rep. Ilhan Omar’s immediate expulsion from Congress after she made a series of controversial statements, including the comments she made against Israel.

Fox News reported that the Alabama GOP just passed a resolution at their summer meeting in Auburn last weekend calling on their delegation to “proceed with the expulsion process” against Omar, who is currently in her first term in Congress.

“Representative Omar has engaged in rhetoric that explicitly runs counter to American values and patriotism by falsely accusing U.S. armed forces of committing war crimes while on mission to liberate her home country of Somalia,” the resolution stated.

The resolution went on to say that Omar “dismissed the 9/11 terror attacks waged by radical Islam” and “sympathized with a convicted terrorist” by advocating for “sentencing leniency.”

The resolution was introduced by State Rep. Tommy Hanes, and it was approved in a voice vote by all but one person. Omar fired back on social media on Tuesday evening to blast the Alabama GOP over the resolution.

“Sorry, “@ALGOPHQ, but this is a representative democracy,” Omar tweeted. “I was elected with 78% of the vote by the people of Minnesota’s 5th District, not the Alabama Republican Party. If you want to clean up politics, maybe don’t nominate an accused child molester as your Senate candidate?”

Omar has been widely criticized from people on all sides of the political spectrum. In their resolution, Alabama Republicans pointed out that Omar has “a disturbing record of using anti-Semitic language that includes alleging Jewish money is used to buy American influence regarding its policy toward Israel.” The resolution went on to mention Omar’s support of the Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions(BDS) movement that has aimed to put economic pressure on Israel to address its treatment of Palestinians.

Omar responded to the resolution hours after she was accused of having an affair with one of her married aides in a divorce filing that was filed by his wife. In her divorce filing, Dr. Beth Jordan Mynett alleged that “her cheating spouse,” Tim Mynett told her in April of this year he was having an affair with the Somali-born Democratic lawmaker. The filing alleges that Mynett made the “shocking declaration of love” for Omar before leaving his wife for her.

Omar has yet to respond to the allegations.
