President Donald Trump made comments regarding background checks for gun purchases, that have Democrats fuming following the latest tragic shooting over the weekend in Texas. The president told reporters that increased background checks “would not have stopped any of it,” according to Mediaite.
Trump said on the White House lawn, “We’re looking at a lot of different bills, ideas, concepts. It’s been going on for a long while, background checks. I will say that for the most part, sadly, if you look at the last four or five, going back even five or six or seven years, for the most part, as strong as you make your background checks, they would not have stopped any of it. So it’s a big problem. It’s a mental problem. It’s a big problem.”

As members of the media continue to hound the president over increased gun control, the president is dealing with another crisis–Hurricane Dorian looms over the southeastern United States, threatening to wreak havoc on Florida and several other states.
But reporters were insistent on cornering the president on the gun issue.
When he was asked about other gun control measures–such as Red Flag laws–Trump said, “I’ve been speaking to a lot of senators. We’ve been speaking to a lot of House members, a lot of Republicans, a lot of Democrats and people want to do something. So we’re going to see, this really hasn’t changed anything. We’re doing a package and we will see what it’s all — how it comes about. It’s coming about right now.”
Trump stands strong against those who hate the Second Amendment: “I will say that for the most part, sadly, if you look at the last 4 or 5 going back, even 5 or 6 or 7 years, for the most part, as strong as you make your background checks, they would not have stopped any of it” pic.twitter.com/r8DC1TO1s0

FREE Gun Law Map: Laws Don't Pause During Social Unrest
In the wake of several tragic mass shootings this summer, many politicians have thrown their support behind so-called Red Flag gun laws. Such rules would allow the government to ban certain individuals from purchasing weapons if they are deemed to be a threat. Surprisingly, many Republicans have supported implementing such rules in recent weeks.
But others are concerned about Red Flag laws being abused. Such laws can result in the confiscation of guns based on uncorroborated claims by one individual. So, for example, if a liberal Democrat lives next door to a Trump supporter they can approach authorities and complain that they believe their neighbor is a “threat” who shouldn’t own guns; and the next thing her neighbor knows, the feds show up at his house to confiscate his weapons.
