Obama Endorses Trudeau Despite Still Not Endorsing Biden

Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden took yet another hit on Wednesday when former President Barack Obama, who he served as Vice President under for eight years, endorsed Justin Trudeau in the Canadian prime minister race. This had to sting Biden, as Obama has still not endorsed him in the United States’ 2020 presidential race.

The Daily Caller News Foundation reported that Obama took to Twitter on Wednesday to officially endorse Trudeau for reelection as prime minister of Canada.

“I was proud to work with Justin Trudeau as President,” Obama tweeted. “He’s a hard-working, effective leader who takes on big issues like climate change. The world needs his progressive leadership now, and I hope our neighbors to the north support him for another term.”

Despite working with Biden for eight years, Obama has yet to endorse him as he continues his presidential run. Back in April, Biden attempted to play off Obama not endorsing him by claiming that he had asked the former president not to.

“I asked President Obama not to endorse and he doesn’t want to — whoever wins this nomination should win it on their own merits,” Biden said.

However, given how popular Obama remains in the Democratic Party, it’s hard to believe that Biden would actually have asked him not to offer his endorsement. After all, Biden has made serving as Obama’s Vice President a cornerstone of his campaign.

“Serving as Barack Obama‘s Vice President was a privilege and an honor. We share the belief that America is a place where ordinary people do extraordinary things and anything is possible,” Biden once wrote in a video ad posted to Twitter.

Four months ago, Trump accused Biden of lying about asking Obama not to endorse him, saying that “there has to be some reason” why Obama has not provided an endorsement.

“How [former Vice President Biden] doesn’t get President Obama to endorse him — there has to be some reason why he’s not endorsing him,” Trump told Hill.TV. “He was the vice president. They seem to have gotten along. And how President Obama’s not endorsing him is rather a big secret. Then he goes and lies and said, ‘I asked the president not to endorse me.’ Give me a break.”

Trump went on to say that Biden has been making this claim because “he’s embarrassed by the fact that Obama’s not endorsing him, so he goes out and says, ‘I asked President Obama not to endorse me.’ … So it could be that President Obama knows something, but there is something going on in that brain of his.”

“I think he’s off,” Trump concluded. “He’s different. We’ve all known him a long time. I’ve seen him for a long time. Frankly, he looks different, he sounds different, and he thinks different. Other than that, I hope he does very well.”
