De Blasio Announces Plans to Defund the Police, ‘Move Resources from the NYPD’

BREAKING NEWS: New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio announced today that he will begin the process of defunding the police by moving “resources from the NYPD to youth and social services as part of our City’s budget.”

The announcement, which the mayor made on Twitter, comes as protesters continue to flood New York City to demand justice for George Floyd.

The last few weeks has seen a swell of support for demands to “defund police,” and instead funnel resources to social programs and other government workers.

Critics of the idea point out that upper income earners would simply hire private security–while lower income earners and communities of color would largely be left without protection.
