Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Mark Milley gave an interview to press on Saturday. It took place in Germany. I guess giving it from Afghanistan is out of the question now.

During the interview he wanted to talk about civil war in Afghanistan, security regarding in-processing of refugees, and the rain in Spain on the plains. Anything but the horrific dog’s breakfast he and his inept cohorts made of the Afghanistan collapse.

Milley wants to change the subject. He knows he’s been bruised by Afghanistan. A significant section of the public think he’s a toy soldier, a kabuki warrior more interested in PC and fruit salad than he is in military proficiency. That may be an unfair rap, given his entire career. But, given his actions in Afghanistan, it’s one that’s gonna stick.

“My military estimate is…that the conditions are likely to develop of a civil war,” Milley said.  “I don’t know if the Taliban is going to [be] able to consolidate power and establish governance.” One can hear the tap, tap, tap of attempted messaging footwork.

“I think there’s at least a very good probability of a broader civil war and that will then, in turn, lead to conditions that could, in fact, lead to a reconstitution of al-Qaeda or a growth of ISIS or other myriad of terrorist groups,” he told media. More good news? Thanks General!

“You could see a resurgence of terrorism coming out of that general region within 12, 24, 36 months. And we’re going to monitor that,” he added. Like you monitored the Taliban advance? “We’ll have to reestablish some human intelligence networks, etc.,” he said. “And then as opportunities present themselves, we’ll have to continue to conduct strike operations if there’s a threat to the United States.” For public relations purposes if nothing else.

Milley told FNC “it is possible to do it.” But added, “We’re going to have to maintain very, very intense levels of indicators and warnings and observation and ISR [Intelligence, Surveillance, Reconnaissance] over that entire region.” Maintain? That’s a joke, right?

And on the potential of terrorists amongst the refugees? “What they’re doing as people come in, they’re getting their names registered. They’re doing the biometrics. They check their irises. They do their fingerprints. They take a full facial photo,” he explained, referencing actions not only of the military but also of the State Department. And if he and State handle this with as much aplomb as they handled Afghanistan, well, I for one, feel soooo much safer.
