Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced Friday that she will retire from Congress at the end of her current term, marking the end of a decades-long political career, as reported by The Gateway Pundit.

President Donald Trump, upon hearing the news, offered a blunt reaction, calling her departure “a great thing for America.”

Pelosi, who has represented San Francisco in the U.S. House of Representatives since 1987, confirmed that she will not seek re-election in 2026. The announcement came in a message addressed to her constituents.

“I have truly loved serving as your voice in Congress, and I have always honored the song of St. Francis, ‘Lord make me an instrument of thy peace,’ the anthem of our city. That is why I want you, my fellow San Franciscans, to be the first to know. I will not be seeking reelection to Congress,” Pelosi said.

“With a grateful heart, I look forward to my final year of service as your proud representative. As we go forward, my message to the city I love is this: San Francisco, know your power,” she continued. “We have made history. We have made progress.”

Pelosi added, “We have always led the way, and now we must continue to do so by remaining full participants in our democracy and fighting for the American ideals we hold dear.”

Pelosi’s announcement confirms weeks of speculation that she would step away from Congress after serving as both Speaker and Minority Leader. Her decision comes as Democrats continue to face challenges from within their own party following losses in several key states.

Following the announcement, Fox News’s Steve Doocy spoke with President Trump, who responded sharply to Pelosi’s retirement.

“I exclusively chatted with President Trump about this breaking news that Nancy Pelosi will be leaving Washington,” Doocy said. “He tells me the following:”

“The retirement of Nancy Pelosi is a great thing for America. She was evil, corrupt, and only focused on bad things for our country. She was rapidly losing control of her party, and it was never coming back. I’m very honored she impeached me twice and failed miserably twice. Nancy Pelosi is a highly overrated politician.”

Pelosi’s retirement marks the closing chapter of one of the most consequential and divisive congressional careers in modern history. She remains a dominant figure within the Democratic Party and has served as a political foil to President Trump throughout much of his presidency.

Pelosi’s final year in office will conclude nearly 40 years in Congress. Her replacement in California’s 11th Congressional District will be determined during the 2026 election cycle.
