President Donald Trump used his 2026 State of the Union address to draw a clear contrast between his administration’s immigration policies and the stance taken by Democratic lawmakers inside the chamber.

More than 70 Democrats reportedly did not attend the address. Those who were present were visible throughout the evening as Republicans frequently stood and applauded various portions of the speech.

At one point, President Trump directly addressed the chamber and framed the moment as an opportunity for Americans watching at home to evaluate their elected officials.

"One of the great things about the State of the Union is how it gives Americans the chance to see clearly what their representatives really believe," Trump said. "So, tonight, I'm inviting every legislator to join with my administration in reaffirming a fundamental principle. If you agree with this statement, then stand up and show your support. The first duty of the American government is to protect American citizens, not illegal aliens."

Republican members rose to their feet in response, applauding and cheering for an extended period.

Democratic lawmakers remained seated.

After the applause subsided, President Trump addressed those who did not stand.

"Isn't that a shame? You should be ashamed of yourself, not standing up," he said.

The president continued by outlining additional immigration-related policy proposals, including action against sanctuary jurisdictions.

"That is why I'm also asking you to end deadly sanctuary cities that protect the criminals and enact serious penalties for public officials who block the removal of criminal aliens, in many cases, drug lords, murderers, all over our country. They're blocking the removal of these people out of our country! And you should be ashamed of yourself."

During that portion of the speech, Representatives Ilhan Omar and Rashida Tlaib were heard shouting from their seats as President Trump continued speaking.

Immigration enforcement was a central issue during the 2024 presidential election, and President Trump returned to the topic repeatedly during his address.

The moment in which he asked lawmakers to stand in support of prioritizing American citizens over illegal immigrants became one of the most widely discussed exchanges of the evening.

The president’s remarks placed Democratic lawmakers in a visible position as cameras captured reactions across the chamber.

With the entire country watching, the exchange provided a clear illustration of the divide between the two parties on immigration enforcement and sanctuary city policies.

The 2026 State of the Union included multiple policy themes, but the immigration segment drew the longest and most sustained reaction from Republican lawmakers.

The contrast between the two sides of the aisle was evident throughout that portion of the address.

As midterm elections approach, the exchange is likely to remain part of the broader political debate surrounding border security, sanctuary city policies, and federal enforcement priorities.

The moment, delivered in prime time before a national audience, placed immigration at the center of the administration’s legislative push for the coming year.
