A chaotic street takeover in Gaithersburg, Maryland, escalated into violence when masked individuals surrounded and vandalized a marked police cruiser while an officer was seated inside, authorities said.

The incident unfolded shortly after midnight on February 22 at the intersection of East West Highway and Connecticut Avenue.

According to video footage and witness accounts, a large group of drivers swarmed the intersection, blocking traffic in all directions and performing high-speed “donuts” while onlookers stood in the roadway.

Montgomery County police said the activity began around 12:39 a.m., when officers observed a large caravan of vehicles linked to takeover activity heading toward the Silver Spring central business district.

Officers began monitoring the group and shut down several intersections in an effort to limit access and protect the public.

Despite those efforts, dozens of vehicles entered the busy intersection, effectively shutting it down.

Dash camera video captured individuals appearing to deliberately obstruct police vehicles by standing in the roadway.

Drivers continued performing “donuts” as the crowd gathered around.
