A veteran employee of the New York City Health Department is facing scrutiny after past social media posts resurfaced in which he made inflammatory statements about Israelis and Zionists, as reported by The New York Post.

Achmat Akkad, 40, has worked for the city’s Health Department since 2017 as a community coordinator. According to the Jewish watchdog group Canary Mission, Akkad wrote in a post on X approximately one year ago, “1 Israeli left in this world would be one too many!”

In a separate post dated November 10, 2021, which has since been deleted, Akkad wrote, “Jews that don’t support apartheid are safe. Zionists aren’t!” The statements were preserved in screenshots shared by Canary Mission.

The renewed attention on Akkad’s posts comes amid controversy surrounding the administration of Mayor Zohran Mamdani.

The city’s Health Department recently drew criticism after staff members allegedly used taxpayer-funded resources to convene a “global oppression” working group meeting in which Israel was accused of genocide.

That episode has prompted calls for city and federal investigations into the department.

Akkad’s social media history, captured in archived screenshots and circulated online, includes additional statements critical of Israel.

In one post under the handle @AchmatX, he wrote, “Israel exists by sacrificing the blood of Black and brown people as an offering to white supremacy.”

In another post from roughly a year ago, Akkad said Zionists “are behind the attacks, far right parties being elected across the world, attacks on free speech, the wars in MENE, the dehumanization of Muslims, and increase in police power…”

The New York Post reported that Akkad was reached by phone and confirmed that he works for the Health Department and operated the X account in question. He declined to provide further comment.

At one point, Akkad referred to himself on social media as the “US Ambassador to Harlem.”

His X account has since been suspended. The Post reported that it has not independently verified the posts due to the account’s suspension.

The Health Department and Mayor Mamdani declined to comment on the matter. The mayor was not involved in Akkad’s hiring.

City records show that Akkad was first employed by New York City in 2015 under then-Mayor Bill de Blasio.

He began as a community associate with the Human Resources Administration/Department of Social Services before joining the Health Department. He currently earns $65,000 annually in his role.

Canary Mission criticized the situation, stating, “If this is who gets elevated into city government, what does that say about the leadership elevating him? New Yorkers should be outraged.”

The controversy adds to ongoing tensions over how public agencies address international political issues and the conduct of government employees on social media platforms.
