A San Jose police sergeant who was shot Wednesday following a multi-county pursuit was hospitalized but was also is in “good spirits,” authorities said.

The sergeant suffered a skull fracture that required surgery, according to a source who spoke to NBC Bay Area.

Police said the officer is continuing to receive evaluation and treatment for his injuries.

The incident began at a Chevrolet dealership on Capitol Expressway in San Jose.

According to police, the suspect stole a green Corvette at gunpoint before fleeing the scene.

Authorities said the suspect then drove approximately 45 miles to Hollister.

Video from the area showed the suspect exiting the Corvette and raising his left arm into the air before gunfire could be heard.

After that exchange, the suspect left the Corvette and hijacked another vehicle, heading back toward San Jose.

Police said the pursuit continued until the suspect returned to the city.

About two blocks from the SAP Center in downtown San Jose, officers and the suspect exchanged gunfire.

In the end, authorities said the suspect was struck by a police vehicle.

“Suspect attempted to flee, attempted to carjack another vehicle when they were struck by a police vehicle. That suspect was declared deceased at the scene,” San Jose police Sergeant Jorge Garibay said.

San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan visited the injured sergeant in the hospital following the shooting. In a statement, the mayor praised the officer for protecting the community.

Police said they plan to release additional details about the incident Thursday morning.

The San Jose police officers’ union also told NBC Bay Area that it intends to speak publicly about the shooting.

The pursuit spanned multiple counties and included at least one confirmed carjacking and a reported armed vehicle theft at the dealership.

Investigators are continuing to piece together the sequence of events, including the gunfire heard in Hollister and the final confrontation in downtown San Jose.

The incident marks a violent sequence that began with an armed car theft and ended in a shootout and fatal collision near one of San Jose’s busiest entertainment venues.
