According to a Fairfax police dispatcher, the violence began after a “property damage crash” between vehicles. An irate man allegedly exited his vehicle and began stabbing individuals in another car involved in the collision.
Virginia State Police later confirmed in a press release that one of the victims, a 39-year-old woman, died as a result of the attack. A dog was also killed during the incident.

Dispatch audio indicated that multiple victims were suffering from stab wounds. In total, there were four confirmed victims, including the suspect. The exact conditions of the two surviving victims were not immediately clear.
Emergency responders reported over dispatch communications that medics had to resuscitate one victim at the scene. Two others were described as critically injured.
All victims were transported to Inova Fairfax Medical Campus for treatment.
As the stabbing unfolded, a responding trooper with the Virginia State Police confronted the suspect.
According to the dispatch audio and a VSP statement, the trooper opened fire “in self-defense” shortly before 1:30 p.m. The suspect was struck twice in the chest.
The suspect was transported to a hospital, where he later died, Virginia State Police said. Authorities have not publicly released his identity.
No troopers were injured during the confrontation, officials said.
The Virginia Department of Transportation issued an advisory urging drivers to “seek alternate routes” as traffic backed up for miles along the beltway in the aftermath of the attack.
The roadway remained heavily congested for hours while investigators processed the scene.
Law enforcement officials have not released additional details about what led to the initial crash or the events immediately preceding the stabbings. The investigation remains ongoing.
The Capital Beltway is one of the region’s busiest highways, encircling Washington, D.C., and connecting multiple Northern Virginia communities, including Annandale.
Sunday’s violence brought traffic to a halt and drew a significant law enforcement presence as authorities worked to secure the scene and assist victims.
