A Secret Service agent assigned to former first lady Jill Biden sustained a self-inflicted gunshot wound last week during an accidental discharge at Philadelphia International Airport, according to officials and reports.

The incident occurred while the agent was on duty, though Jill Biden was not present at the time. Authorities said the discharge did not affect the former first lady’s movements, and no other injuries were reported.

Initial information released by the Secret Service described the injury as a gunshot wound to the agent’s leg. However, additional reporting later clarified the nature of the injury.

“When he tried to holster his gun, he shot himself – yes, right in the butt cheek,” RealClearPolitics reporter Susan Crabtree wrote on X.

A Secret Service spokesman later confirmed further details regarding the injury when asked about the report.

“It is accurate that the agent suffered an unintentional, self-inflicted gunshot wound to his hip area,” the spokesman told The Post.

The agency described the incident as a “negligent discharge,” a term used to indicate an unintentional firing of a weapon.

According to Philadelphia police, the firearm was discharged while the agent was inside an unmarked Chevrolet SUV at the airport.

The spokesman also addressed another claim included in Crabtree’s reporting, which suggested the agent may have been using a flashlight attached to his firearm while searching for a misplaced cell phone at the time of the incident.

“That is not what was reported to us from the scene,” the spokesman said.

Officials have not released additional details about the sequence of events leading up to the discharge beyond confirming that it occurred while the agent was handling his weapon.

The Secret Service said the incident is now under review by its Office of Professional Responsibility, which is responsible for examining internal conduct matters.

The agency declined to provide further specifics about the ongoing investigation.

The spokesman said additional details could not be shared at this stage, noting that doing so “could compromise future interviews.”

Philadelphia police confirmed that the incident took place within the vehicle and that officers were made aware after the weapon was discharged.

Authorities reiterated that the injury sustained by the agent was not life-threatening. No members of the public were harmed, and no disruptions to airport operations were reported.

The event has drawn attention due to the involvement of a protective detail assigned to a high-profile individual, though officials emphasized that Jill Biden was not at the location when the discharge occurred.

The Secret Service has not indicated whether any disciplinary action will be taken, pending the outcome of the internal review.
