CNN chief media analyst Brian Stelter is facing backlash after attributing the collapse of former Rep. Eric Swalwell’s California gubernatorial campaign to reporting by major news organizations, as reported by the Gateway Pundit.

Swalwell, a Democrat who had been competing in a crowded primary field, suspended his campaign following multiple allegations of sexual misconduct, including a claim from a former staffer. He has denied the allegations.

During a broadcast on CNN, Stelter described the developments as a validation of investigative reporting and credited journalists with bringing the issue to light.

He said the situation was a “testament to the power of investigative reporting” and pointed to coverage from CNN and the San Francisco Chronicle as playing a key role in ending Swalwell’s bid for governor.

According to reporting highlighted by Blaze News, the controversy surrounding Swalwell intensified after several individuals came forward with allegations, contributing to mounting pressure on his campaign.

The developments followed a period in which Swalwell had held a narrow lead among Democratic candidates in the race.

Despite the suspension of his campaign, Swalwell has continued to deny the allegations.

In a statement released earlier, he said, “To my family, staff, friends, and supporters, I am deeply sorry for mistakes in judgment I’ve made in my past. I will fight the serious, false allegations that have been made – but that’s my fight, not a campaign’s.”

Stelter’s remarks also came as public reaction unfolded on social media, where critics challenged his characterization of the media’s role in the outcome of the race.
